The recent shutdown of Anthropic's Fable 5 model has sparked plenty of discussion about AI, cloud services and just how dependent we've become on platforms we don't control.
At the same time, companies like Microsoft, Apple and others are investing heavily in on-device AI. The goal is simple: make your devices smarter without constantly needing to "call home" to a data centre somewhere else in the world.
That means:
• Faster performance
• Better privacy
• More control over your data
• Less reliance on external services
• Greater resilience when systems change
Interestingly, I had a reminder of this today while trying to access Facebook.
After updating my security settings, I was prompted to move to a passkey and biometric authentication using my fingerprint. It was a small change, but it highlighted how quickly technology is evolving and how important it is to keep up.
If you haven't reviewed your security settings recently, now is probably a good time.
Check your:
✅ Password manager
✅ Multi-factor authentication settings
✅ Passkey availability
✅ Recovery email and phone number
✅ Logged-in devices
Whether it's AI, social media or online banking, we're moving towards a future where security is becoming more seamless, but only if we take the time to set it up properly.
The technology is getting smarter.
Our security habits need to keep pace.
