BARWON HEADS ROAD UPGRADE GETS MAJOR BOOST, COMMUNITY OVERJOYED BY THE LONG AWAITED NEWS

By: Lincoln Holmes, Election Team
Date: 21/3/2025

A major announcement has been made regarding one of the region's busiest roads, which residents in southern Geelong have been complaining about for years.

On Friday morning, local Labor member for Corangamite, Libby Coker, was joined by Deputy Prime Minister and federal member for Corio, Richard Marles, and state member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney, to announce an additional $68.2 million will go towards the full delivery of the second stage of the Barwon Heads Road upgrade.

The second stage area incorporates a six-kilometre portion of road from Reserve Road in Marshall to Lower Duneed Road in Connewarre.

As part of the upgrade, which has been welcomed by locals, the major arterial will increase from two lanes to four lanes.

The project will also include new traffic lights, upgraded intersections, and a new shared-use path for cyclists and pedestrians.

The added funding brings the total project cost to $318 million, jointly funded by the Federal Government and Victorian Government.

Coker has long been campaigning for the works along Barwon Heads Road, saying, "The Barwon Heads Road duplication will create a safer road environment for our fast-growing region by improving traffic flow and ensuring working families spend less time in the car and more time at home."

Delivery of the project will begin later this year, with the Commonwealth planning to work closely with the Victorian Government and local community as works commence.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, and Local Government Catherine King said, "This additional investment will ensure the full upgrade of Barwon Heads Road can be delivered, increasing the capacity of the road and intersections to allow traffic to flow more freely."

She also took aim at the opposition, saying, “After ten years of neglect from the Federal Liberal Government, It’s great to have a partner in Canberra that can find Victoria on a map and deliver critical infrastructure that will cut travel times and boost safety.”

Coker added that by 2031, Barwon Heads Road is projected to carry up to 44,000 cars and trucks every day, also mentioning that Armstrong Creek as one of Victoria's fastest-growing suburbs.

The state member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney also welcomed the news, saying, “The Barwon Heads Road Upgrade will cut congestion for locals that depend on these roads every day.”

Member for the Bellarine, Alison Marchant, highlighted the safety benefits and how the upgrade will connect road users.

The announcement received a mostly positive reaction on social media, with community members thrilled by the news.

With one writing, “Great news!!! Thanks for committing to what the community needs and deserves.”

However, some critics pointed out that the funding is long overdue, with one commenter saying, "And only a decade late?!?"

Countless road works have been carried out along the thoroughfare over the last year, with motorists often stopped in long cues of cars.

POLICE PROBE LAUNCHED AS BUSHFIRE SPREADS JUST METERS FROM HOMES IN SURF COAST RESERVE

By: Editorial Team, Lincoln Holmes

People along a Surf Coast street feared their houses were under threat as a fire, which is under investigation, burned through shrubland just meters away.

Firefighters responded to Spring Creek Reserve around 6:30 pm on Sunday evening, after receiving reports of a fire spreading not far from properties.

CFA crews from Grovedale, Torquay, Bellbrae, and Anglesea were on scene, with five tankers on scene working to ensure the fire didn't spread.

A CFA spokesperson confirmed that the blaze was under control within 20 minutes.

A local resident who spoke with Geelong News Now said, "If firefighters took longer to respond, you could be speaking about houses being impacted."

"The grassland is so dry, and this heat is terrible. It could spread so fast, especially up the hill." Conditions at the time were hot; however, at the scene, there wasn't any wind.

In a social media post, the Torquay CFA posted online, saying, "Volunteer firefighters from the brigade responded on Sunday afternoon to a report of a grass and scrub fire along Spring Creek below the Ocean Views Estate."

"The brigade, with the assistance of neighbouring brigades, were able to minimise the spread to nearby residents' properties and spent hours making sure it was out."

The incident is under investigation by police, with Locals reporting that youths in the area may have started the blaze.

EXCLUSIVE: TROUBLE RIDDEN TORQUAY ROAD SUFFERS YET ANOTHER SMASH

By: Editorial Team, Lincoln Holmes
Date: 8/3/2025

Traffic was once again affected following yet another crash at a troubled local intersection, as calls grow for urgent action to be taken.

Emergency services were called to the corner of Torquay Road and Reserve Road in Grovedale around 10:35am this morning, following reports of a collision.

Multiple people were assessed at the scene by paramedics, with a spokesperson for Ambulance Victoria confirming no emergency treatment or transport was required.

Torquay-bound traffic along Torquay Road was diverted into one lane, with delays building down to Marshalltown Road.

The crash blocked the middle turning lane and one lane on either side, with police forced to direct motorists.

This mornings crash comes less than 15 hours after another collision at the same intersection, and less than 24 hours after a crash just meters down the road.

Around 9:30pm last night, emergency services were called to the Reserve Road intersection following reports of a crash.

Upon arrival, crews discovered that two cars, a Mercedes and a Toyota, had collided, with the Toyota sustaining major damage to its front.

Geelong News Now understands that in that crash, the driver of the Toyota failed to give way.

Paramedics transported two teenage girls to Geelong Hospital by road ambulance after they sustained upper body injuries.

And this morning's crash comes under 24 hours since a crash just meters down the road at the corner of Smith Street and Torquay Road, around 4:45pm yesterday afternoon.

In that crash, a primary school-aged child and another person were taken by road ambulance to Geelong Hospital.

All three crashes come as the spotlight is being shone onto Torquay Road, with some claiming a speed limit change is to blame.

Works are expected to start later this year on a set of traffic lights at the Reserve Road intersection.

More to come.

As serious questions are being asked about the state of one of the region's major roads, another crash has plagued it.

Emergency services were called to the corner of Torquay Road and Reserve Road in Grovedale around 9:30 pm, following reports of a large collision.

Upon arrival, crews discovered that two cars, a Mercedes and a Toyota, had collided, with the Toyota sustaining major damage to its front.

Geelong News Now understands that the driver of the Toyota failed to give way.

Paramedics assessed multiple patients at the scene, with two teenage girls transported to Geelong Hospital by road ambulance after sustaining upper body injuries.

The crash came just hours after a four-car crash at the corner of Torquay Road and Smith Street, also in Grovedale.

In that crash, a primary school-aged child and another person were taken by road ambulance to Geelong Hospital.

Both crashes come as questions are being asked about whether a speed limit change on Torquay Road is contributing to more crashes.

Traffic along one of the region's busiest roads was earlier reduced to one lane following a serious crash.

Emergency services, including police, paramedics, and firefighters, were called to the corner of Torquay Road and Smith Street in Grovedale around 4:45pm this afternoon, following reports of a multi vehicle crash.

Upon arrival, it was discovered that three cars had been involved in the nose-to-tail crash, with worst damaged being the middle vehicle.

Geelong News Now reporter Lincoln Holmes was among the first on the scene, with the crash occurring just meters up the road from where he was driving, arriving on scene before emergency services.

Paramedics assessed multiple patients at the scene.

A spokesperson for Ambulance Victoria confirmed that a primary school aged girl was transported by road ambulance to Geelong Hospital in a stable condition, after sustaining injuries to her upper and lower body.

Another person was also transported by road ambulance to Geelong Hospital, however ambulance Victoria is unable to provide any further details.

Traffic was slow going past the scene, with motorists directed into one Torquay bound lane, while others were directed off into other nearby local roads.

A spokesperson for Fire Rescue Victoria confirmed that firefighters were on scene within minutes, declaring the scene safe by 5:00pm.

The scene was completely cleared by 6:00pm, with the vehicles involved on tow trucks and the road reopened.

Locals have expressed their anger at a changed speed limit along the road, with some saying it’s caused more crashes since being changed.

TEEN CHARGED FOLLOWING ALLEGED INCIDENT INVOLVING A FIREARM AT LOCAL AIRPORT

By: Editorial Team, Lincoln Holmes
Date: 7/3/2025

The teenager at the centre of a major emergency at Avalon Airport yesterday afternoon has been charged.

Police were called to Avalon Airport, around 2:50pm after receiving reports that a 17-year-old boy, who was armed with a shotgun, had allegedly boarded a commercial flight.

In a video seen by Geelong News Now, passenger Barry Clark is shown holding the teenager in a headlock, while a pilot holds the barrel of the shotgun.

Geelong News Now understands that the teenager, who is from the Ballarat area, is alleged to have entered the tarmac after cutting or jumping over a security fence.

Once officers arrived, they took the teenager into custody in front of shocked onlookers before putting him in the back of a divisional van.

The teenager was interviewed by police throughout the evening, before being charged early this morning.

The teen has been charged with several offences, including Unlawfully taking control of an aircraft, Endangering safe operation of an aircraft, Endangering safety of aircraft, Dangerous goods on an aircraft, Threat to the safety of an aircraft, Bomb hoax, Possess firearm, and Traffic-related offences.

The teenager was wearing a high-vis jacket over the top of a suit at the time of the incident, with those on board the plane telling GNN that he told the Jetstar crew he was from maintenance.

Police also located two bags and vehicle belonging to the boy, with the bomb squad responded to the scene as a precaution.

He has been remanded in custody to appear at a children's court at a later date.

The CEO of Avalon Airport, Ari Suss, released a statement early this morning, saying, "Melbourne Avalon Airport has now fully reopened, with all flights and operations back to normal scheduling. The safety and security of our passengers, staff, and community, as always, remain our highest priority."

"As part of our ongoing commitment to security, we have implemented further measures across the airport, including within the terminal and surrounding areas."

"We continue to work closely with authorities to maintain a safe and secure environment for all travellers."

"Our teams are on hand to assist travellers as normal operations resume."

"This remains an ongoing investigation, and we will be able to provide further details in due course as more information becomes available."

Deputy Prime Minister and federal member for Corio, whose electorate covers Avalon Airport, released a statement reading, "I was closely watching the events at Avalon Airport yesterday."

"This would have been a scary situation for everyone, but the bravery of the pilot and Barry Clark in 1C, who took action and put themselves in harm's way, was nothing short of heroic."

A source from within Avalon Airport's security team has told GNN that it is feared that serious consequences could have occurred if the teenager wasn't restrained.

Ahead of the upcoming Avalon Airshow, serious questions are being asked about the safety of those attending.

The investigation remains ongoing, with the airport confirming they are working with police. Police have stressed that there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Several neighbors who spoke with Geelong News Now described the street as "usually quiet” compared to others in the area, also describing it as "a tight-knit street."
