So there appears to be some advantage in having your team being close to the start of the alphabet. If you sort the team names alphabetically, none of the last eight teams on that list are in the top 8 on the ladder.

Only Essendon & Carlton are from the first part of the alphabet but not in the 8.

If we consider the Bulldogs as Footscray, the top 9 on the ladder come from the first 11 teams listed alphabetically!
