Lots of people at Geraldton’s Orana cinema to enjoy short bicycle-themed films from all over the world. Dare-devils ganging through picturesque terrain, to-die-for …and a few almost did! We learned about a very plucky young girl who became a paraplegic from a bike accident but, against all odds, got back on her bike to ride again. “Grinta;” a fabulous inspiring story of an Olympic cyclist who ended up a “domestique” in the Tour de France (these are team cyclists who enable winners to win stages) but went on to win the hardest and steepest stage of all - Mont Ventoux. He married an Aussie he met in Sydney. There was another heartwarming film about a young Down Syndrome man learning to cycle well enough to accompany the rest of his family on long rides, plus one about an Aussie gal who achieved her Guinness Book of Records target for a super fast and long downhill non-stop ride in NZ, to raise money for conservation in Queenstown, which apparently now has severe environmental damage from climate change and tourism. The funniest film concerned very high bikes ( think penny farthings, but with the same-sized two wheels.) Seems some of the jokers who ride these started jousting with soft toys on long poles. They then set fire to these toys, to up the ante, which resulted in one cyclist sustaining burns, and another cracking ribs from not knowing how to safely dismount. Boys will be boys!

This play promises to be an absolute corker. A rock-solid WA ensemble chose FIFO as their narrative; let’s face it, the high-vis crew have intersected all our lives. By speaking to actual FIFO workers, ideas for the story took shape.
FIFO won the top award for its debut - ( The Blaz Award. I knew George Blazevic. A stellar character in the world of performing arts.)

Preview-launch of “The Wheat Queen” musical and 60-year anniversary of Greenough Museum and Gardens was a raging success. Co-author Dr Moira McKinnon read excerpts from the script, interspersed with musical interludes composed and arranged by maestro Simon O’Sullivan, and sung by Cheryth, Laura, Simon, Dario and yours truly. Huge thanks to all who helped behind the scenes, ie, : the volunteers who garden, clean and cook, Sonia and Maria Alaya, Sound Engineer and Musician Brenton Meynell, Mayor Gerry Clune and wife, and last but not least, erstwhile Museum Curator Gary Martin. And all of you who risked the rain to attend! We look forward up seeing a full-scale production of “The Wheat Queen.”

Fresh-weather Sunday in Geraldton, with fun on the deck in front of Regional Sounds, playing the all-access piano, enjoying goodies from Petit Remi and posing under the old merry-go-round by the sea-tree, before adjourning upstairs for Pop-up poetry readings. MC Bobbi Fawcett introduced me to a poetry style called Anaphora, which led to finding out about the Epistrophe writing device. We managed to railroad a father-and-son building team, in Geraldton for a year from Ballarat to construct a new homewares center. They came upstairs to drink their coffees, and ended up telling us about ( and reciting from a phone-Google ) the old clock poem in our main street… which none of us knew about. Another young local writer, Mark, shared two limericks. Most offerings were about the explosion of spring wildflowers, with the super-talented Libby Rowland sharing Abrolhos memories and one about a visit to her auntie’s farm. We also exchanged V-Dub stories (everyone of a certain age has one. What’s yours? Please share!) We’re all looking forward to Big Sky Writers Festival, where Coral Carter, of Mulla Mulla Press fame, will read from her three books and hold a workshop. We had a chuckle over “Grandad’s Hat”, kindly supplied by Bill and Meg Gordon, who run the annual Bush Poetry Convention in Boyup Brook. This Thursday at 1pm, at Geraldton Library, talented local writer-poet Grant Woodhams is giving a free creative writing workshop.

Musical excerpts from the story of local pioneer Mary Farrelly will be part of today’s celebration of the Greenough Museum and Gardens, beautifully maintained for the past 60 years by volunteers and curator-historian Gary Martin. Gary and Dr Moira McKinnon researched Mary Farrelly’s history and wrote her story as a musical, which has been composed by Simon O’Sullivan, a Graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium.
