The Macedon Ranges Police Service has responded to growing concerns about the operating hours of the Gisborne Police Station, following the circulation of a petition on local Facebook groups.
The petition, which has gained traction in the community, questions the availability of police services after hours.
In a statement issued earlier today, Acting Sergeant Steve Mazziol sought to address these concerns, emphasising that although the public reception counter at the Gisborne Police Station may not be open 24/7, 24-hour police response is still available in the area.
The statement has attempted to reassure residents that a dedicated response unit is operational at the station around the clock, meaning police officers are on duty at all times, even if the front desk is closed.
โWe understand the frustration and confusion regarding the station's hours, but we want to make it clear that police services remain available,โ said Steve.
โWhile the public counter may not be open at all times, our officers are still on the ground, responding to calls for help when needed,โ he added.
Despite the assurance of a 24-hour response unit, many residents remain sceptical, with some arguing that the closure of the station's front counter could lead to delays in receiving immediate help.
โTo be fair, two divvy vans at night (with 1 supervisor car) covering Clarkefield to Malmsbury still doesnt exactly provide heaps of comfort,โ wrote one concerned resident.
Another said Victoria Police should 'read the room,' and open the station 24/7.
โWhere do those that are abused or seeking refuge go?โ he asked. โStand out the front of the station and wait for passers by? Vicpol is a shell of its former self and the government is a disgrace for allowing this to happen.โ
โCrime runs 24/7 in our community,โ added another. โAnd Victorians will continue to vote labor,โ added another.
While the police service maintains that the closure of the front counter does not affect the level of service provided, local residents continue to voice concerns about the accessibility of police services.
The communityโs ongoing frustration is a reminder of the importance of maintaining visible, easily accessible services, especially in areas like Gisborne, where public safety is a top priority.
Others, meanwhile, appreciated the explanation.
โWell done on clearing this misconception,โ wrote one supporter. โSometimes communities react without asking the police members first.โ
The statement concluded with a pledge to keep the community informed and engaged, but it remains to be seen whether these reassurances will ease the growing dissatisfaction among Gisborne residents.
