Steel repairs have been completed on the hull of Battleship Texas. Some troublesome areas were found once the ship was sandblasted, so additional repairs have been made. These areas will be blasted and coated before the ship submerges in the water once again.

The ship’s hull has been coated in PPG SIGMASHIELD 880 GF to protect the steel from potential corrosion. While the hull is supposed to be red below the black band at the waterline, the Battleship Texas Foundation has chosen to not spend the extra funds on a cosmetic choice that will not be seen once the ship is back in the water. The coatings that have been applied are plentiful and should protect the ship for many years to come.

Above the boot top (above the black band) the ship has been painted Navy Blue 5-N. This color was matched from existing examples found aboard (both internally and externally) the vessel. The ship was painted in this camouflage scheme (Measure 21) prior to deploying to the Pacific Theater in World War II. At this time Battleship Texas is the ONLY museum ship painted in this scheme and only one of two Battleships in their wartime measure.

In 1863, a famous photograph captures Queen Victoria atop her favorite horse, Fyvie, accompanied by her loyal servant and confidant, John Brown, at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. This image symbolizes the Queen’s deep affection for the Scottish Highlands and the simpler, private life she enjoyed there, away from the strict formalities of court.

Balmoral Castle was Victoria’s retreat, a place where she could escape the pressures of monarchy following the death of her beloved husband, Prince Albert, in 1861. In John Brown, her Scottish servant, she found not only a faithful attendant but a close and trusted companion. Their relationship sparked much gossip, as Brown’s informality with the Queen was seen as unusual for the time. However, it was clear that his presence offered her comfort during her years of mourning.

The scene in the photograph is intimate, yet regal. Queen Victoria, dressed in traditional riding attire, likely a long, elegant skirt and a bonnet, is perched confidently on Fyvie. John Brown, known for his rugged Highland appearance, stands nearby, ready to assist the Queen. His proximity and the way he is included in such personal moments reflect his unique status in the Queen’s life.

This 1863 image not only represents Queen Victoria's fondness for the Scottish landscape and way of life but also illustrates her deep need for companionship during her grief. Balmoral became a sanctuary for the Queen, and John Brown, alongside her beloved Fyvie, was a key part of that life.

My wife and I (gf at the time) were driving through Nevada in my 18 wheeler in the middle of July in a serious heat wave. We stopped at the only place with a bathroom we had seen in a few hours and slept for the night. Right by the truck was a sign that said “next services 118 miles". We were hours from the nearest area people would congregate in any way so this little podunk store/gas station was crowded nonstop. Come morning time, we climbed out of the truck to get something to eat… out of the whole crowd of at least 50 people making pit stops, this guy walked right up to us, layer down and showed us his belly and kept whimpering like “please help me". He was COVERED in ticks and so starved and dehydrated it took over a week of tiny drinks and tiny treats before he could have a real drink/meal without immediately puking it all up. The vet said if we had rescued him even a day later he would have died. He was RIGHT on the edge of “salvageable”… This is him a few years later when he realized we were going to the dog park.

A section of exceptionally well-preserved Roman water supply system that was uncovered in Stabiae, Italy. It consists of a large lead tank with conduits leading in and out that used to regulate the flow of water through the rooms of the villa. Like Pompeii and Herculaneum, Stabiae was destroyed in the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 CE.

"I am a white woman and although I did not give birth to this man, he is my son. He has been my son for 14 years. I love him like I birthed him.
My biological children grew up with him as their brother. He lived in my house. I would trust him with my life and he would trust me with his.
I have watched him been treated unfairly... because of the color of his skin. I have seen him be falsely accused... because of the color of his skin.
I will stand for him. I will fight for him. I will protect him to the best of my ability, and if I'm honest... I would want to hurt anyone who tried to hurt him.
I will never know what it is like to have brown or black skin but I do know what it is like to be a white woman who loves someone fiercely who has brown or black skin. And I know what it is like to pray every day that it will not be his last."

The world before AutoCAD and digital tools in architectural design was completely different: plans drawn by hand with millimeter precision, hours spent fixing errors on paper, and physical layouts that required detailed craftsmanship.

Every line, every perspective, was crafted with patience and manual skill, which made the architectural process a technical and creative art.

Found this in Corbin Ky. It came out of a factory where it was used to store uniforms and probably anything. It was beyond filthy and wreaked of coal dust and mouse p*e plus four coats of paint. The raised panels and southern yellow pine blew me away. It’s 9’ 9” t. 5’ w and 2’ deep. Great storage. I was lucky enough to find 22” wide barn boards that made great shelves.
