A bit about me....
Hi, I'm Margo Nugent, the founder/puzzle designer of Audrey's Hatbox – nice to meet you :)
I started this little business around Christmas last year at the urging of family and friends who had seen some of the puzzles I'd made for the free online Jigidi website. It seemed a natural progression to move into getting physical versions made up, so I had some samples made at a little boutique Gold Coast factory called Qpuzzles... and fell in love with the quality, thickness, print, everything, the manufacture is gold standard!
A month or so ago I had the chance to visit the factory – these photos were taken on that visit, and they happened to have a few spares left over from my puzzle orders so I not only got to meet some of the fabulous small Qpuzzles team and see where the magic happens, but it was beyond thrilling to see Audrey's Hatbox puzzles on the shelf! Nicole Osner, who as the business administrator is Qpuzzles' main liaison point, was just as lovely and helpful in person as she is on email, and gave me and my mum (who came with me) two of the spare puzzles to take away with us. I chose 'Pixie Village' and Mum took 'Mad About Flowers'.
As a journalist/magazine editor I play with words and photo layouts all day and you could say I have a creative 'eye', but although I take many photos as part of my job, and also have dabbled in drawing and painting, I am neither a trained photographer nor am I a professional artist. I create my puzzle images using AI image-generating tools and I love how technology has made this more accessible to someone like me to truly stretch my artistic imagination. A lot of people have mixed feelings about AI, and some are strongly opposed to it, but I see AI and digital tools as extending people's creativity, not stifling it. For me personally, these tools allow me to express ideas and concepts that I have bouncing around inside my head - and which before I could never have dreamed of bringing to life! I also know how much of my human input goes into creating each puzzle – for a start, without super-specific direction the images would be very bland and generic, so coaxing out something meaningful that inspires and moves me is the first goal. From there I spend hours editing and polishing, adding different elements, pouring care, effort and close attention into creating something I love enough to release to the world. When someone tells me one of the images brought them joy, it thrills me to the moon and back!
For those who have supported my small startup business by buying a puzzle, I thank you from the bottom of my heart. And for those who have generously given me feedback about their puzzle and shared a photo of their finished work – it simply makes my day. There's no better feeling than sharing something that makes you happy with someone who also appreciates it.
I love connecting with people so please don't be afraid to reach out if you have a question or even just to say hi.
Happy puzzling,
Margo xx
