I’d been told by a few people that this hike was well worth it, so when our original Adventure Girls 4x4 day fell through (with just two of us attending), we decided to swap the steering wheel for hiking boots.
And honestly? Best decision.
The track itself isn’t too technical, but it does keep you honest with a mix of steady ups and downs, long stretches of soft sand that really test your legs, and not a lot of shade in some parts.
By the time we finally reached the bay, we’d covered just over 5 km, and the view felt like such a reward. With the tide way out, the beach was scattered with shells I’d never spotted before, like little treasures waiting to be found.
This spot has a bit of history too as it’s named after Edmund Kennedy, the explorer who led one of the most famous (and tragic) expeditions through Far North Queensland back in 1848. His journey was brutal, and most of his party never made it, but his name has lived on in places like this. It feels fitting in a way, a tough trek that ends in a beautiful, wild landscape, much like the challenges he faced.
All up, swapping four wheels for this hike was absolutely worth it. A little challenging, a lot rewarding, and one I’d definitely recommend if you’re in the area.
Be sure to carry plenty of water and some snacks!
