APVMA Rodenticide Review – What AEPMA Members Need to Know
After a detailed national review, the APVMA has released proposed regulatory changes affecting anticoagulant rodenticides used across Australia. These proposals are aimed at reducing risks to people, pets and the environment, particularly native birds and mammals.
Two regulatory pathways are underway:
🔹 Proposed suspension of second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs)
Products containing brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum, difethialone and flocoumafen may be subject to a suspension so stricter, enforceable controls can be implemented quickly. If this proceeds, SGARs would still be available for use, but only under new national instructions and conditions designed to reduce wildlife exposure.
🔹 Proposed reconsideration decisions for all rodenticides
Across both first- and second-generation products, the APVMA is proposing tighter restrictions on how and where products can be used, and the cancellation of certain products where risks can’t be adequately managed.
📅 Public consultation is now open and closes 16 March 2026
This is the key consultation for pest managers. Submissions should focus on technical, safety and practical considerations — particularly in complex environments like grain storage, food processing, warehouses and infrastructure sites.
AEPMA encourages members to review their current rodent control programs and consider contributing practical, real-world feedback to help shape the final outcome.
The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) invites written submissions on the proposed regulatory decisions for the reconsideration of anticoagulant rodenticides, which was published in the APVMA Special Gazette on 16 December 2025.
