Footy Card Friday πŸ‰πŸƒ

πŸ”΄πŸŸ‘βš«οΈβš‘οΈπŸ‘Ή Celebrating Sir Doug Nicholls and the big game between Port Adelaide and Melbourne, these cards are from the 1995 AFLPA series:

Jeff Farmer was a highly skilled small forward, beginning his career at the Demons in 1995, going on to play 118 games and kick 259 goals for the club. He returned home to WA and played for Fremantle from 2002 to 2008 kicking a futher 224 goals from 131 games for the Dockers. All up he played 249 games for 483 goals, becoming the first indigenous player to kick 400+ AFL goals, winning Goal of the Year in 1998, All Australian in 2000 and 3x leading goalkicker at the Demons.

Gavin Wanganeen was a special player, he starred for Port Adelaide in the SANFL in 1990, debuting as a 16yo he played 24 games and kicked 46 goals, including 2 in a winning Grand Final. He was rectuied by Essendon and made the All Australian team in his second season in 1992 (and in 93, 95, 01 and 03). His 1993 season was unbelievable, winning the Michael Tuck Medal in the pre-season Foster's Cup victory by the Bombers, going on to win the Brownlow and Premiership with the 'Baby Bombers' as a 20yo! After 127 games and 64 goals at Essendon, he returned to SA and captained Port Adelaide in their inaugural AFL campaign in 1997 and through to 2000, playing a key role in their 2004 premiership. After playing 173 games and kicking 138 goals for the Power, he retired in 2006 - after 300 AFL games, 2x Premierships, 5x All Australians, Tuck and Brownlow medals, a Power B&F, and making the Essendon and Indigenous Teams of the Century, along with the SA and AFL Hall of Fames. A champion player!

Following Wanganeen's path, Che Coackatoo-Collins played for Port Adelaide in the SANFL in 1993 before Essendon rectuited him ahead of the 1994 season. He played 85 games for 109 goals for the Bombers from 94-98, including 2x pre-season premierships, before returning to Port Adelaide for a further 75 AFL games for 106 goals. His younger twin brothers David and Donald played for the Demons in the mid-1990s and his nephew Nakia has played 49 AFL games at Geelong and now Brisbane.

Footy Card Friday! πŸ‰πŸƒ

This week's edition is from the Select 1996 AFLPA Series, featuring 3x Tasmanian Tigers and 2x iconic Cats 🐯🍎🍏🐈

Matthew 'Richo' Richardson was recruited from Devonport as a father-son (via father Alan 'Bull' Richardson) and quickly became a superstar of the competition. Richo wore his heart on his sleeve across 282 games from 1993-2009, booting 800 goals he was a 3x All Australian, AFL Hall of Famer, Tasmanian Team of the Century, Richmond Team of the Century, 13x club leading goalkicker, Best & Fairest and represented Tasmania, The Allies and The Dream Team.

Brendon 'Benny' Gale was recruited from Burnie, going on to play 244 games for the Tigers as a Centre-Half Forward and part-time Ruckman from 1990 to 2001, he kicked 209 goals. A Tasmanian Hall of Famer and Tasmanian representative, later becoming CEO during a golden era for the Tigers.

Michael 'Butch' Gale, older brother of Brendon, was recruited to Fitzroy from Penguin, playing 105 games from 1985-1993, before crossing to the Tigers for a further 91 games from 1994-1998. From a family of champion footballers, the Gales were dependable players for the Tigers during a period of resurgence for the club alongside fellow Tasmanian 'Richo'.

Anthony William 'Billy' Brownless, from Jerilderie in rural NSW, played 198 games for Geelong from 1986-1997, kicking 441 goals. He formed a great partnership with fellow forward Gary Ablett Snr, making the All Australian team in 1991 and a 2x leading goalkicker for the club, unfortunately playing in 4 losing grand finals despite kicking 2/3/4/3 goals in each. Billy has connections to Tasmania, with his borther Blair moving south and forging a successfull career with Clarence, winning 3 premierships and a best & fairest.

Gary Ablett Senior was a genuine icon of the game. Known as 'God' to some, he played 242 AFL games from 1982-1996 (his first 6 at Hawthorn), kicking 1031 goals, which is remarkable given he played the first half of his career on the wing!! A 3x Coleman medallist, Norm Smith medallist, 4x All Australian, Best & Fairest, 9x club leading goalkicker and named in the AFL, Cats and Vic Teams of the Century.

πŸ‰πŸƒ Footy Card Friday πŸƒπŸ‰

This week's edition celebrates the big game tonight and the big news from the week. We feature the 1995 Select AFLPA cards, with a couple of Brisbane Bears/Lions champions hailing from the Apple Isle. 🦁🦁🍎🍏

Alastair Lynch was born and bred on the North West Coast of Tasmania, playing football at Wynyard before moving to the Hobart Football Club under coach Peter Hudson. He was drafted by Fitzroy in the 1986 VFL draft, playing full-back and centre-half back, taking on the likes of Tony Lockett and Jason Dunstall. In 1993 he was swung forward by Fitzroy's (Tasmanian) coach Robert Shaw, winning the best & fairest and kicking 68 goals for the season. In 1994 Lynch moved to the Bears as a massive recruit for the struggling side, although his first few season were marred by injury and chronic fatigue syndrome. Post-merger, Lynch became co-captain of the new Lions πŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€βœˆοΈ along with Michael Voss, before going on to become a key component of the Lions' 3-peat under Leigh Matthews. He finished his career with 633 goals from 306 games, with 3x premierships πŸ†πŸ†πŸ†, an All Australian (in 1993 at full back!), 6x leading goalkicker for his club, he was named in both the Fitzroy and Tasmanian Team of the Century, and has been awarded 'Icon' status in the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.

Adrian Fletcher played for TFL club Glenorchy (whom Peter Hudson also played for, kicking 616 goals from 81 games!🀯), drafted in 1988 by Geelong, he won the William Leitch Medal πŸ… as the best player in the TFL in 1988. He was then traded to St Kilda, before he ventured to the Brisbane Bears in 1993 and played 86 games and another 21 for the Brisbane Lions, before finishing up at Fremantle from 1998-2001. In total he played 231 games, kicking 97 goals, across 5 clubs - one of only 4 VFL/AFL players to do so, alongside Dale Kickett (1990-2002), Les Hughson (1927-1937) and Les Abbott (1904-1912). Fletcher was co-captain of Fremantle in 2000-01 πŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€βœˆοΈ, won their best & fairest in 1999, and was best on ground (Norm Goss Memorial MedalπŸ…) in a VFL Premiership πŸ† for Williamstown in 2001. Fletcher is in the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame.
