Guess which costs more in Kingborough: the toilet & shower in a shed, or the permit to plumb it in?

A local bloke put in a simple shower, toilet and basin in the corner of his shed. The permit required by council has cost him more than the fixtures and pipework combined.

When he built his house in 2021, the permit for the whole place was $1,145. Now it's $1,697. That's up 48.2% in five years, roughly double inflation.

Do you think that’s a reasonable increase in cost? I don’t.

Every extra dollar of admin makes it harder for people to build, fix and improve things on their own property.

If elected, I'll fight to keep those costs down to make Kingborough easier to operate in.

This tree is ‘high conservation value’ according to council. On private property, you can’t develop anywhere near it or damage the roots without serious financial implications.

Council just ran machinery straight through those same roots clearing a drain on Howden Road, no survey, no protection, no worries at all.

This tree is habitat for the spotted pardalote. You are subject to costly surveys and a planning process built around protecting the root zone on your own property.

The drain needed doing, that's not the issue. The issue is one rulebook for residents and another for council on its own land.

These trees are a hazard along this stretch of road and need to be assessed and managed accordingly.

Kingborough desperately needs a dose of common sense. Planning that works for people, not against them.

Let's talk about Kingborough Council's habit of treating ratepayers like a cash cow.

I've been out in the community talking to the people, and one message keeps coming back: people are shocked by the unprecedented rates increases over this current term.

So tonight, I'm going through council's recent record.

Residential rates up 26.8% this term. Over double inflation. A $2 million + deficit this year. A $1.3 million bus stop. DA approvals down from 630 in 2018 to 263 last year, while planning costs climbed $1.3 million a year.

Kingborough Council has a spending problem, not a revenue problem.

It is clear council needs change.

I have solid business experience, and I know what an unsustainable operation looks like. This is one, and it's ugly.

A small fix, but a big deal to the people using this road.

Two days ago, Marcus, a local ratepayer flagged this pothole on a blind corner on Treatment Plant Road with me. I raised it with council. Today, it's fixed.

Rebuilding trust between council and community starts with exactly this. Elected representatives showing up, following through, and delivering the goods.

The workers have done a fantastic job prioritising this, it was a total hazard.

It's not always glamorous, and it doesn't need to be. It just needs to work.

Two young blokes vandalised my sign in Margate over the weekend. I was filthy about it.

Since then both of them reached out and we caught up this morning. They fronted up, took responsibility, looked me in the eye and apologised, and we turned it into something positive.

One is helping me pull down posters at the end of the campaign, and we’ve made plans for the other to come into my business for work experience as a diesel mechanic later in the year.

Funny how these things go.

Kids make mistakes. What matters is what they do after. That's the kind of community I want to be part of building.

This is what happens when the basics get skipped for the shiny stuff.

This pothole is at the top of Treatment Plant Road, on a dangerous intersection. It's not the only one. Locals have shown me the same story at Nubeena Crescent in Taroona, sitting damaged for months.

Meanwhile Council is happy to blow $50k+ on the notorious decorative waves at Kingston Beach. If elected, I'll move a motion to stop that spending immediately. Not one blue cent more.

Basics first. Listening to residents and responding to their needs. Enough with the vanity projects.

That's what a focused, responsible Council looks like.

I'll keep following this pothole up until someone owns it and we get a result.

Turns out my campaign sign is tougher than the blokes who tried to take it down.

If you genuinely want a poster for the pool room, just ask. Save yourself the knife next time.

Jokes aside, running for council as a self funded independent costs time, money and a fair bit of your own life outside work. When someone decides to vandalise a sign, it’s disappointing.

It’ll take more than that to stop me!

The sign's fixed and the footage has gone to Tasmania Police. This kind of behaviour has no place in Kingborough.

Big day out on the road knocking up posters.

I’ve gone through 300 so far, with more on order. If your sign hasn't gone up yet, it will, as soon as I can!

I'm a true independent. Never been a member of any party and I'm not on any ticket or grouping.

Plenty of people can talk strategy. Fewer can deliver it. That's what sets me apart, a proven ability to convert words into results. I've got the business experience to bring real value and help turn this Council around.

A huge thank you to all the poster hosters. It makes a real difference, and the support has been overwhelming.

There's a clear groundswell of people in Kingborough wanting change, and the only way to get it is to vote for it.

Kingborough Council is failing ratepayers, and the numbers prove it.

The planning department's budget is up 80% since 2018, from $1.7 million to $3 million.

Over the same period, development application approvals are down 58%, from 630 to 263.

Put those together and the planning department cost per approval has gone up over four times, from $2,700 to $11,500+.

If your business ran the numbers this way, you'd be bankrupt. At this council, it's just another year.

This is a complete and utter governance failure, and it needs to be urgently addressed.

It's one reason I'm calling for a whole of business review of Kingborough Council, to find out where the money's going and why we're getting less for more.

Tasmanian farmers and landholders have had a gutful of red tape and overreach.

Today at Parliament House lawns, farmers, landholders and everyday Tasmanians turned up en masse for the FLAG rally, tractors and all. Organised by Lindsay White, backed by TasFarmers, RAW and thousands of petition signatures, the message was loud and clear.

Farmers fined for clearing burnt vegetation off a fence line. Landholders treated like criminals for managing their own land. This is red tape for its own sake, and it's costing Tasmanian producers and landholders financially and mentally.

Kingborough knows this story better than most, after the compulsory Landscape Conservation Zoning disaster. That fight is a huge part of what drove me to run for council. If elected, I'll push by any means necessary to reverse the LCZ mess and back landowners having real control over their own land.

The Tasmanian way of life depends on being able to utilise what’s rightfully yours.

Let’s hope the public servants are finally ready to listen. The tide is turning in Kingborough.
