In the realm of Australian literature, we often find ourselves examining the works of iconic authors who have shaped the narrative of our national identity. One such author is Henry Lawson, whose short story The Bush Girl offers a glimpse into the rugged life of early Australian settlers. However, it is essential to approach this text through a lens that embraces the rich tapestry of Aboriginal perspectives, particularly those of the Kabi Kabi people. By re-reading Lawson’s work with a focus on truth-telling, we can foster a deeper cultural understanding and promote reconciliation in our literary discourse.

🌱✨ Unmasking Australia Zoo ✨🌱

For tens of thousands of years, our people have walked this land, caring for Country and living in balance with all beings. To us, animals are our kin — they hold spirit, story, and knowledge. They are not here for display, profit, or entertainment.

When I see photographs of animals behind fences, branded with showmanship, I do not see conservation. I see exploitation. Putting creatures in cages and calling it “education” hides the truth of what real care for Country looks like. Real care means protecting their habitats, letting them roam free on their own terms, and respecting the ancient relationship between land, water, and all living things.

“Unmasking Australia Zoo” means revealing what’s hidden behind the gloss: a business built on the captivity of animals, wrapped in the language of conservation. But true conservation, from our perspective, comes from listening to the Old People and the old ways — respecting the natural order and protecting the wild where it exists.

We don’t need fences to connect people with animals. We need respect, Country, and freedom for all living beings.
