Maybe it’s time we stopped only talking about the signs — and started talking to our kids. 🐊❤️
With crocodile safety and signage being discussed so much across Far North Queensland at the moment, I want to put something out there that our family has been working towards.
My daughter Heleana is a performing arts student who has spent the past few years studying and working on the Gold Coast. She has had the opportunity to work in children’s entertainment and educational programs, including performing as Zero the Hero in a road-safety program.
She has seen firsthand how powerful it can be when important safety messages are delivered to children through characters, music, movement, performance and fun.
And she wants to bring that home.
🐊 Meet Rocky the Ranger Crocodile.
Our goal is to bring Rocky into North Queensland schools, kindergartens and community events to help teach children what it actually means to live, play and explore safely in Croc Country.
My husband remembers being taught water safety at school, including crocodile safety. I have raised three children in North Queensland, and not one of them received a program like that through school.
That really concerns me.
Our children SHOULD be outdoors. They should be fishing, exploring, camping and enjoying the incredible place they are lucky enough to grow up in. But they also need to understand the animals and environments they share it with.
A warning sign is important — but education needs to go further than a sign.
Kids need to understand why they shouldn't approach the water's edge. Why friends shouldn't dare each other to take risks. Why crocodile sightings should be taken seriously. Why feeding or approaching a crocodile can put other people at risk. And why no sign doesn't mean no croc.
We don't want children frightened of North Queensland.
We want them WILD WISE.
Heleana is finishing Year 12 and wants to come home and help give North Queensland kids some of the engaging educational experiences she has been fortunate enough to be part of while studying and working on the Gold Coast.
So we're putting it out there.
Schools. Kindergartens. Councils. Community groups. Local businesses.
If you believe our kids deserve engaging, age-appropriate crocodile and water-safety education, we'd love you to get behind Rocky the Ranger.
🐊 BE CROC AWARE — YOU'RE IN CROC COUNTRY.
See it. Report it. Be Croc Aware.
This isn't about being anti-crocodile or pro-crocodile.
It's about keeping our kids informed and safe while teaching them to respect the wildlife that makes North Queensland home.
