Super proud to be part of such a magnificent community of women who lead businesses, inspire change and strengthen the social fabric of our region.
In celebration of International Women’s Day, we dedicated our Autumn issue to the women shaping our communities in powerful ways. I was thrilled to profile four such leaders who are not only inspiring in their own fields, but are also redefining what success looks like across the Northern Rivers.
From eco-education and Indigenous wellbeing to food advocacy and purpose-driven communications, these women are creating connection, opportunity and real impact — showing that true leadership isn’t just about personal achievement, but about lifting others up along the way.
I feel incredibly grateful to live and work among them.

Autumn is here! So proud of these babies.🍂There’s always that buzz when, after the long days and the eye-twitching moments, you see it all come together in print.

Huge thanks to our fabulous writers & and
a super special mention to our publisher extraordinaire — my fabulous work wife .linko — who adds all the pretty to my print. (You know I’ll always say yes… even to those crazy “shall we start another?!” ideas.) And here we are at #18 — our baby all grown up! 💕

The biggest thrill of all is knowing you’re picking up copies, and hopefully feeling inspired to discover and explore this fabulous region we’re lucky enough to call home.

Looking for a beach read this weekend? Our summer edition hits all the right notes. ☀️🏄🏼‍♂️

Such a fun issue to produce, and always an honour to write about the inspiring people , incredible events , worthy causes , and global creative talent that make up our region’s fabric.

Equally fascinating was my deep dive into our region’s oldest pubs—serving up a slice of history with every pint! 🍻

And of course, a shoutout to our talented writers , , and the infamous (I mean, who better to write our surf report?!) who rounded out this edition with some fabulous reads. 💙

As the managing editor of a lifestyle publication rooted in community and connection, I feel compelled to speak from the heart.

LOCALE Magazine was created for locals and visitors across the Northern Rivers and Gold Coast. At our core, we are about community — supporting one another, staying connected, celebrating shared joys, and coming together in times of hardship.

Today, we stand in solidarity, love, and support with the Jewish community and the people of Bondi. We are heartbroken by the horror they have endured and deeply saddened by the immense loss of life caused by last night’s act of terror. Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and neighbours who are grieving during this unimaginable time.

Acts like this shake us all. They remind us that violence does not discriminate — it can happen in any community, anywhere. Yet even in moments of profound darkness, we also witness extraordinary humanity. We honour the everyday heroes — regular locals like Ahmed Al Ahmed — who stepped forward without hesitation, putting their own lives on the line to protect others. This is the very essence of community, and it is the hope we must carry forward, particularly during this time of Hanukkah.

This tragedy is deeply personal for many. Last night, a close friend and Bondi resident lost both of her neighbours. Other dear friends within the Jewish community continue to live with daily fear. Their pain is real, and it is shared.

Now, more than ever, we must stand together — in love, in compassion, and in unwavering support for one another. May we continue to choose unity over division, courage over fear, and community over isolation.

With love and solidarity,
Donna Rishton-Potter
Managing Editor, LOCALE Magazine

One of the highlights of the season for me was getting to interview and write about two of our country’s culinary heroes - Christine Manfield is a global icon and Mindy Woods a MasterChef superstar and Indigenous advocate for First Nations food sovereignty. Together they are working to reshape Australia’s food landscape.

It was such a bloody privilege to meet them both (they are the most glorious, welcoming, down-to-earth women - aside from being so magnificently talented)… and to taste their food (OMG!) at Savour The Tweed

Thank you for your immense generosity 🧡

So very fortunate to spend one whole glorious day painting with an amazing group of women (and one man) at ~ & are individually brilliant artists, and together, the most fabulous, fun and down to earth teachers. We were treated to delicious food, lots of laughs and some amazing new skills.

I’ve never painted in oils before so this was a huge learning curve. It was messy (sorry Kate!) and so much fun. Thankyou for including me! And to you dear Kate and Emily. 🎨💕

Would it really be the long weekend without the annual Byrnes/Potter catch up?! Known one of these handsome lads since I was 7 years old. Only then, he was my grade 3 school teacher.
