Important information for artists and bands to consider:
It has come to our attention that many emerging artists are entering agreements with record labels without conducting proper research. This serves as an official warning to all artists and bands considering label partnerships.
The music industry contains a large number of record labels, and running a legitimate label involves far more than maintaining a social media presence. Several labels make commitments they fail to honour, offering promises they cannot deliver. We are aware of multiple labels operating in this manner, and there are undoubtedly more.
Before signing any contract, you are strongly advised to conduct thorough due diligence. This includes researching the label online, asking direct questions, and contacting current or former artists on their roster to verify the label’s credibility.
A key distinction to investigate is whether the label provides genuine physical distribution, not just digital distribution. While digital distribution is easy to obtain, legitimate physical distribution—placing your albums in retail stores and reputable online outlets worldwide—requires proven marketing and promotional support. This includes advertising, reviews, and interviews in established media outlets such as Metal Hammer, Rock Hard, Classic Rock, and Sweden Rock to name a few. Without proper promotion, distributors cannot sell copies, and unsold returns can result in significant financial losses.
Supporting a label that cannot fulfil its obligations is a waste of your time and money. With nearly 32 years of experience in the industry, we have witnessed many labels disappear quickly, with only a small number surviving for more than three decades. A reputable label prioritises quality over quantity, backed by recognised artists and credible media presence. Social media alone is not an indicator of professionalism, and digital views and statistics can be easily manipulated to create a false impression of popularity.
Artists are urged to proceed with caution, think strategically, and make informed decisions before committing to any label agreement.
