CALLOUT FOR VOLUME 18, 2026, ISSUE 1: NICHE 📔🐻🦌🦂👞
‘Niche’ is a word with many meanings. In architecture, it’s a shallow recess or cavity traditionally used to house decorative statues. In ecology, a niche is the particular set of environmental conditions to which an organism is specifically suited. Generally, a ‘niche interest’ may refer to a unique obsession, often entertained by only a few people.
So, what’s your niche? For the first issue of 2026, we want to hear about your ultimate passions; this is your excuse to share your favourite things in the world. It’s everyone’s Issue—in Niche, anything goes, so info dump on that special interest, write a love letter to the tribe that always supports you, compile a photograph showcase of your extensive seashell collection, recap the books you love to devour in your reading nook, create fictional utopias of your ideal world, or publish that disgustingly well-researched cross-analysis of every Dracula text ever created (you know who you are). Don’t forget this is the MQ student publication, so aspects of uni life are more than welcome: perhaps you’ll review a unit, unveil the best social spots on campus, introduce your society, or launch a detailed plan on how you would improve the MQ experience.
Grapeshot accepts anything that can be printed, from news pieces to feature articles, short fiction, guides, comics, artworks, poetry, photographs, reviews, essays, memoirs and more—so get creative and use your MQ student email to send submissions to [email protected]. All written submissions must be in Word doc format. Please note that submissions exceeding 2,000 words are unlikely to be published in print, but may be chosen for our website grapeshotmq.com.au. All contributors must be MQ students.
