THE ABORIGINAL SKIN SYSTEM THAT COULD TELL YOU WHO YOU COULD MARRY.

In parts of Australia’s Western Desert, kinship was organised through a sophisticated system of skin groups.

For Martu, Juwaliny and Yulparija people, one documented four-subsection system includes:

PANAKA • KARIMARRA • MILANGKA • PURUNGU

These were not simply names.

Each skin group was connected to particular relationships, responsibilities and expected behaviour — including marriage rules.

In this system:

PANAKA ↔ KARIMARRA
MILANGKA ↔ PURUNGU

These are the recognised marriage-partner relationships within the four-subsection example documented by the National Museum of Australia.

Skin relationships also shaped how people addressed one another.

Brothers belonged to the same skin group, while a father’s brother could be addressed as “father” rather than “uncle”. Children of brothers could therefore be regarded as brothers and sisters rather than cousins.

And the system extended beyond human relationships.

Skin associations could also connect people with particular animals, plants, waters, places, rocks, weather patterns, songs, dances and ancestral beings.

The result was a social system that helped organise:

MARRIAGE • FAMILY • RESPONSIBILITY • BEHAVIOUR • COUNTRY

It was not one universal “Aboriginal kinship system”.

Different Aboriginal societies had different systems. The four-subsection example documented here belongs specifically to Martu, Juwaliny and Yulparija people of the Western Desert.

A name could identify where you stood in a much larger network of relationships.

THE PLANT DISAPPEARED THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO.
MICROSCOPIC STARCH SURVIVED ON THE STONE.

A grinding stone can look like an ordinary piece of rock.

Under a microscope, however, its surface can preserve tiny starch grains left behind when plants were processed.

Archaeologists can study these microscopic remains alongside use-wear, plant tissues and other residues to investigate what people were grinding and pounding.

At Madjedbebe in northern Australia, researchers recovered starch from ancient sandstone grinding stones and identified evidence for processing several starchy plants, including:

WATERLILY • CHEEKY YAM • LONG YAM • POSSIBLY KAPOK BUSH ROOT

Some of the analysed grinding stones date to around 8,320 years ago, while another is associated with an age of about 690 years.

At Cuddie Springs in New South Wales, grinding-stone fragments dating to about 30,000 years ago have also produced evidence of plant processing, including starch residues.

The remarkable part is the scale of the evidence.

The plant itself may leave little obvious trace after thousands of years.

THE STARCH CAN.

And those microscopic grains can help reconstruct parts of an ancient Aboriginal diet that would otherwise be almost invisible.

THE STONES LOOK RANDOM — UNTIL YOU SEE THE PATTERN.

Across granite Country in southwest Western Australia, Aboriginal people constructed small stone structures that could help catch terrestrial animals.

They are known as lizard traps.
The basic design can look remarkably simple:
A large, flat granite slab.
A smaller stone used as a prop.
A dark space underneath.
But the arrangement was purposeful.

Research shows these traps were constructed to provide reptiles with places to shelter, bask, forage and escape aerial predators. When startled during a hunt, reptiles could retreat beneath the slab, where hunters could surround and catch them.

Published records document lizard traps across Noongar, Yamaji and Ngadju lands in southwest Western Australia. A 2022 review identified 317 published lizard-trap records.

The structures weren't simply piles of rocks.
They were modifications of the granite landscape that combined animal behaviour, shelter, hunting strategy and detailed knowledge of Country.

And there is an important archaeological lesson here:
A stone structure cannot automatically be called a trap just because it looks unusual.
Researchers use its construction, location, cultural knowledge, associated evidence and function to determine what it represents.

THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO, PEOPLE WERE MAKING OBJECTS THAT WEREN’T JUST ABOUT SURVIVAL.
Across Australian archaeological sites, researchers have found shell pendants, beads, teeth, seeds and other personal ornaments.
These small objects can provide evidence for aspects of life that stone tools and food remains cannot show as clearly:
• Personal decoration — objects worn or carried on the body
• Identity — ornaments may have communicated aspects of social identity
• Exchange — materials can reveal movement and connections between communities
• Craftsmanship — some required drilling, piercing, shaping or careful finishing
• Social life — ornaments show that people invested time and resources in objects beyond immediate subsistence
Some discoveries are thousands of years old, making these tiny objects valuable archaeological evidence of how people expressed themselves and connected with others.

🇦🇺 AUSTRALIA — 2 SEPTEMBER 1943

THE SECRET MISSION THAT SAILED FROM WESTERN AUSTRALIA

On 2 September 1943, the small wooden vessel Krait left Exmouth Gulf, Western Australia, carrying a 14-man Allied commando team on one of the most audacious raids of the Second World War.

The operation was known as Operation Jaywick.

The plan was extraordinary: sail thousands of kilometres toward Japanese-occupied Singapore, secretly enter the harbour using small folding canoes, attach limpet mines to Japanese ships—and escape.

The Krait eventually reached the waters near Singapore. Six men paddled into the harbour, where they placed explosives on Japanese vessels.

The raid destroyed or seriously damaged seven ships, representing more than 35,000 tonnes of shipping.

The raiders then made the dangerous journey back.

The Krait returned to Australia in November 1943.

The operation demonstrated how a tiny force using stealth, deception, intelligence and unconventional tactics could strike deep inside Japanese-controlled territory.

And it all began with a small vessel leaving the Western Australian coast on 2 September 1943.

THE DAY THE SECOND WORLD WAR OFFICIALLY ENDED

On 2 September 1945, representatives of Japan formally signed the Instrument of Surrender aboard the American battleship USS Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay.

General Douglas MacArthur accepted the surrender on behalf of the Allied powers.

Representatives of the United States, China, the United Kingdom, Soviet Union, Australia, Canada, France, the Netherlands and New Zealand signed the document.

Australia's representative was General Sir Thomas Blamey, Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Military Forces.

The ceremony lasted only about 23 minutes.

But it formally ended the Second World War's conflict with Japan after years of fighting across Europe, Asia and the Pacific.

For Australia, the surrender also meant the beginning of the long process of bringing home thousands of Australian servicemen and prisoners of war.

A painting on a rock wall doesn't come with a date. So archaeologists look for scientific clues around the pigment.

They can examine:
CHARCOAL • PIGMENTS • MINERAL CRUSTS • STRATIGRAPHY • ORGANIC MATERIAL

At Nawarla Gabarnmang in Arnhem Land, archaeologists excavated a small rock slab carrying part of a charcoal design.
The slab had fallen from the shelter ceiling and was found within a dated archaeological layer.
Radiocarbon analysis placed the painted rock at approximately 28,000 years ago—making it the oldest confirmed pictograph reported from Australia in the study.

But dating rock art isn't always this straightforward.
Researchers can also examine microscopic layers of pigment and mineral deposits, including material that formed above or below paintings. Organic materials such as beeswax can sometimes be directly dated when they are associated with paintings.

At Nawarla Gabarnmang, different panels have produced very different ages, showing why archaeologists cannot simply date an entire shelter's artwork as one event. Some paintings there are only hundreds of years old, while evidence for much earlier art also exists.

THE ABORIGINAL MESSAGE STICKS THAT CARRIED INFORMATION ACROSS COUNTRY
These were not simply decorated pieces of wood.
Message sticks were marked wooden objects used in Aboriginal communication across distance, carried by messengers between communities and Nations.

They could accompany messages about ceremonies, gatherings, news and other important matters. The markings helped the messenger remember and accurately communicate the intended information.

But there was an important distinction: the carved marks did not necessarily function like written words. In some documented traditions, the spoken message carried the actual information, while the stick helped establish the messenger's authority and supported the delivery of the message.

The designs varied between regions and objects. Historical collections include sticks with cross-hatching, straight lines, zigzags and other carved patterns; some even retain traces of ochre in the cuts.

A documented Kimberley example was collected in 1884 and was associated with carrying information about events and news.

So a small carved stick could represent something much larger:

A MESSAGE.
A MESSENGER.
A CONNECTION BETWEEN COMMUNITIES.

And the most important lesson is that there was no single universal message-stick system across Aboriginal Australia. Their meanings and uses varied between cultures.

GOLDEN WATTLE BECAME AUSTRALIA'S NATIONAL FLORAL EMBLEM
On 1 September 1988, the formal gazettal and public announcement recognised Golden Wattle (Acacia pycnantha) as Australia's national floral emblem.
The choice had a much longer history.
Wattle had been associated with Australian identity since the Federation era, and in 1912, Prime Minister Andrew Fisher proposed that wattle be incorporated into the Commonwealth Coat of Arms.
Today, Australia's national floral emblem represents the familiar green and gold associated with the country.
And 1 September has another connection to wattle:
NATIONAL WATTLE DAY.
It was officially proclaimed in 1992, bringing Australia's different Wattle Day traditions together on the first day of September.
More than 1,000 species of wattle grow across Australia—but Acacia pycnantha, the Golden Wattle, is the national floral emblem.

English astronomer Richard Carrington was observing sunspots when he witnessed an extraordinary flash erupt from the Sun.
It was a powerful white-light solar flare.
About 17 hours later, an enormous geomagnetic storm reached Earth.
Auroras appeared at unusually low latitudes, while telegraph systems across parts of the world malfunctioned, with some equipment catching fire and operators receiving electric shocks.
The event became known as the Carrington Event.
It remains one of the most famous extreme space-weather events ever recorded.
In 1859, the world had telegraph wires.
Today, we depend on power grids, satellites, communications networks and navigation systems—making extreme space weather a very different kind of modern risk.

A TINY PIECE OF BONE CAN PRESERVE EVIDENCE OF ANCIENT TECHNOLOGY.

Aboriginal people across Australia made tools and implements from bird, kangaroo, wallaby, possum and other animal bones. Their uses included fishhooks, spear points, barbs, needles, awls and other tools.

Some bone points were carefully shaped, scraped and polished to create strong, functional edges and tips.

On fishing spears, bone points could be attached as barbs. One documented Australian Museum example uses bone points bound to wooden prongs with plant fibre and resin; one end pierced the fish while the other acted as a barb to prevent escape.

Archaeological discoveries from the Adelaide River in the Northern Territory include bone points associated with Aboriginal occupation spanning roughly 4,000 years. Some have been interpreted as barbs for fishing spears, particularly where they occur alongside abundant fish remains.

Research from southern Victoria has also identified a prehistoric site associated with hunting and the manufacture of bone points.

These small artefacts are valuable because bone usually preserves less readily than stone.

THE ABORIGINAL STONE QUARRY WHERE ONE ROCK TRAVELLED HUNDREDS OF KILOMETRES

Near Lancefield in central Victoria, Wil-im-ee Moor-ring — Mount William — was an important Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung source of highly valued greenstone for making ground-edged axes.

The stone was prized because it was tough and could be ground to a sharp, durable edge.

At the quarry, Wurundjeri people extracted stone from natural outcrops and underground workings. Archaeological remains include hundreds of mining pits, waste-rock mounds and former working areas.

The rough stone could be shaped into axe blanks at the quarry, while further grinding and polishing could take place elsewhere.

And then the remarkable part:

THE STONE TRAVELLED.
Greenstone axe heads from Wil-im-ee Moor-ring have been found across southeastern Australia, with documented distributions extending up to about 800 kilometres from the quarry.

These were not simply useful tools.
The axes were prestigious trade items, creating social connections and obligations between Aboriginal groups.

Today, the quarry remains a place of deep cultural significance to the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people and is protected as Aboriginal cultural heritage.

ONE QUARRY.
ONE VALUED STONE.
A NETWORK THAT STRETCHED ACROSS COUNTRY.
