One-on-one coaching sessions, a deep dive into the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) and a morning-tea session for female medical students are among the new offerings at the RANZCO Congress 2025.

The event is being held in Melbourne and will run over four days – November 14-17.

Organisers say that the innovative program for the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists event, which will also include the “wildly popular” Clinical Controversies session, had already attracted more than 900 registrations in early October.

Port Lincoln's Eyre Eye Centre’s long relationship with ZEISS Vision began with something of a challenge: a visiting retinal specialist wanted to start providing intra-vitreal injections. Specifically, they wanted a Zeiss OCT so that the data was easily comparable to their own practice in Adelaide.

New global research shows eye health is one of the smartest investments governments can make.

According to The Value of Vision report from the IAPB, every $1 invested in eye health can yield a $28 return, unlocking $447 billion in global economic benefits each year.

Simple, proven measures – like school eye screenings, cataract surgery, and on-the-spot reading glasses – could also help 22 million more people gain employment annually.

Read more about this world-first research, published in collaboration with the Seva Foundation and The Fred Hollows Foundation, and unveiled at the United Nations General Assembly.

A national survey has revealed that rates of vision impairment around Australia have fallen over the past decade, but challenges remain in bridging vital eyecare access gaps for many.

Health and Ageing Minister Mark Butler launched the Australian Eye and Ear Health Survey (AEEHS) at Parliament House, Canberra, on 9 October, World Sight Day.

A media release said the survey examined more than 4,500 Australians across 30 sites nationwide — including over 600 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participants — to assess changes in the prevalence and causes of vision impairment and, for the first time, hearing loss.

A recent Johnson & Johnson Vision (J&J)-commissioned survey has uncovered a significant gap in how Australians aged 40-55 understand and manage presbyopia.

Despite being a natural and inevitable part of aging, the condition is often overlooked or under-treated, presenting an opportunity for optometrists to lead the conversation and improve patient outcomes, the company said on 2025 World Sight Day (9 October).

Although presbyopia affects everyone as they age, the survey found only 68% of Australians aged 40-55 were familiar with the condition, far below the average of 90% for the Asia-Pacific region.

Specsavers has launched low-level light therapy (LLLT) alongside intense pulsed light (IPL) as part of a major rollout of advanced dry eye treatments that it hopes to have in 100 stores across Australia and New Zealand soon.

Following a successful IPL pilot in a small number of stores, decision-makers within the network are convinced of the impact it can make on patients with dry eye and have given the greenlight to expand the service with a combined IPL and LLLT offering.
