Following the success of last year’s Paediatric Masterclass and Anterior Segment Workshop, the Australian College of Optometry (ACO) is bringing both events back on Sunday 14 September.

The ACO said that, this time, the events would be held on the same day as part of a double-bill program.

Both sessions sold out in 2024, and optometrists are encouraged to secure their place early.

A 35-year-old man who visited the doctor after experiencing blurry vision and redness in his left eye for eight months has discovered he had a worm in his eye.

The New England Journal of Medicine has shared a case study on ocular gnathostomiasis, a rare parasitic condition that is caused by consuming raw or undercooked fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians or mammals that carry the larvae.

According to a story in People, the patient in the case study was a man from rural India, who was found to have consumed infected chicken and fish after the diagnosis was made.

In the wake of ‘sobering’ surveys about working conditions and salaries for optometrists in Australia, industry leader Martin Gregory is promoting a different path.

I’m not an optometrist. I’m an optical dispenser by trade, with an MBA and more than two decades as a partner in a large regional independent practice. And I’ve had the privilege of working alongside some of the best optometrists in the country.

One thing I’ve learned over that time is that running a successful practice is not just about being a great optometrist. It’s about much more. It’s about building something.

It’s not just a job – it’s a journey.

Researchers in the US are preparing to present their findings on a “breakthrough technique” that uses electricity to mold the cornea and offers a potentially safer, cheaper alternative to LASIK.

And it’s a technique they claim to have stumbled on, almost by accident.

The peak body for private hospitals – which perform 72% of the Australia’s eye surgeries – is worried about the sector’s viability and has called for expanded use of private facilities for public procedures, as a new Productivity Commission (PC) report suggests improvements to Australia’s ‘care economy’.

The Australian Private Hospitals Association (APHA) said the country’s public-private hospital blend had consistently ranked number one in the world – but that standing has “never been more precarious”.

A team of Korean researchers has developed a next-generation wireless ophthalmic diagnostic technology that replaces the existing stationary, darkroom-based retinal testing method by incorporating an “ultrathin OLED” into a contact lens.

This breakthrough, highlighted in ACS Publications, is expected to have applications in diverse fields such as myopia treatment, ocular biosignal analysis, augmented-reality (AR) visual information delivery, and light-based neurostimulation.

The first occurred on 21 July 2025 when the group revealed a deal with South Korean company PUcore for its assets and entities involved in the development, manufacturing and sale of monomers used in the production of high index ophthalmic lenses.

The second acquisition was announced 4 August 2025 involving Automation & Robotics (A&R), a renowned player in the design and manufacture of automated systems for optical lens quality control, serving both mass production facilities and prescription laboratories.

When Stewart McConnell talks about contact lenses, his patients know to listen.

That’s not just because he’s been involved in the optometry industry for many decades. It’s not just because he’s the owner-optometrist of a small family business – Lewis & McConnell Optometrists – in Mt Waverley, Victoria, and is a practitioner who specialises in contact lenses.

What really lends weight to his words and accuracy to his advice is that he’s been wearing contact lenses for the past 40 years and they know he walks the talk.
