When Giulio Gerace opened Reel Optics on Queensland’s northern Gold Coast in late 2024, he knew exactly which lens manufacturer would form the backbone of his dispensing philosophy.

It was the same company he had championed years earlier across a larger group of practices – and one he credits with helping him build a reputation for exceptional quality without the premium price tag usually attached.

The inventor of the Eyerising International repeated low-level red light (RLRL) therapy for myopia, Professor Mingguang He, has outlined “notable design flaws” in a study suggesting reduced cone density in children who received the therapy and has provided a glimpse into upcoming studies he expects to show opposite findings.

Prof He, the company’s founder and chief medical officer, was responding to a study entitled ‘Cone density changes after repeated low-level red-light treatment in children with myopia’, authored by Liao et al. and published in JAMA Ophthalmology.

For Queensland retinal specialists Dr Sharma and Dr Alexander Newman, the Optos California has become so embedded in daily workflow that the word “scan” has almost disappeared from their vocabulary.

Patients are now “getting an Optos” as routinely as they once had visual acuity checks, and both clinicians say the device, which captures a 200-degree image (up to 82%) of the retina, has fundamentally reshaped how they detect, document, and manage retinal disease – particularly when it emerges on the periphery.

Two specialists explain how ultra-widefield imaging with Optos technology has helped them find pathologies that might have been missed before, and allowed them to intervene earlier.
