Rowville Lysterfield Community News News for our local community.

The Rowville–Lysterfield Community News, conceived and started in September 1981, is a newspaper by the people, for the people, about the people. It is designed to create a strong sense of community and it is an ideal forum for the community to express their viewpoints and stay abreast of local events.

Join the Knox Youth Summit! Every two years, Council holds a youth summit for young people. The next one will be from August to September this year.

This year's summit will focus on how the council can support young people with life skills and education, outdoor and recreation activities, and communication between young people and the Council.

The summit will be divided into two age groups.

Young people aged 12 - 18
When: Thursday 14 August from 10:00am – 14:30pm

If you are a student in Knox: Schools will bring their students along to the day. Register through your school.

If you are a young person who lives in Knox but either do not attend school or attend outside of Knox: You are welcome to attend. Please contact [email protected] to register your interest.

Young people aged 16 - 25
When: Thursday 11 September from 18:00 pm – 20:00pm

🥳Knox will be providing free community training services! These workshops are designed to help improve and develop new skills in important topics like child safety and managing challenging situations. 🥳

These sessions will be delivered by expert facilitators and will be held either online or in-person. Registration is essential.

Workshop topics include:

-Running a successful community group or sports club
-Safe food handling
-Child safe standards for community groups
-Managing challenging members and volunteer-related situations
-Cultural awareness
-3Rs of family violence
-Building aboriginal cultural competency

Come along to our Dying to Know Day event and learn important information about end-of-life planning.

Dying to Know Day, held annually on August 8, is a national event that encourages open and honest conversations about death, dying, and end-of-life planning. The purpose of this day is to break down stigma and the mystery surrounding these topics.

On this event you will have a guided tour of the Fern Tree Cemetery with Karin Orpen, OAM, Secretary of the Knox Historical Society and former Mayor who will explore local history and reflect on life's big questions.

The Eastern Community Legal Centre will also hold an Estate Planning session where you can learn the essentials of wills, power of attorney and how to make sure your wishes are known and respected.

A woman has died following a collision in Rowville on 26 June.

Officers were told a pedestrian attempting to cross Dandelion Drive was struck by a cyclist about 1.35pm.

The pedestrian, a 66-year-old Rowville woman, was conveyed to hospital with serious injuries.

The cyclist, a 49-year-old Rowville man, was assessed by paramedics at the scene for a minor injury.

Sadly, the pedestrian later died in hospital.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Calling all Knox creatives!

Knox's Arts & Culture Advisory Committee are now recruiting for new members to join and serve from September 2025 to September 2027.

The committee guides Council's arts and cultural services, such events, programs, venues, and creative partnerships.

The committee meets in person four time a year. It includes:
• 8 community members (residents, artists or community group reps)
• 4 industry experts (arts professionals from public or private sectors)

Who should apply:

-People who live, work, study or take part in arts in Knox

-Have an interest or experience in arts

-Understand and are passionate about creating social, cultural or economic change in the Knox arts scene.

Applications close Wednesday 23 July, 2025 at 5 pm.

The workshop will cover:

-The different type of reusable nappies and how to choose one
-How to get the right fit
-How to store and wash dirty nappies
-Cost savings of reusable nappies per nappy-wearing child
-Health and waste benefits of reusable nappies
-Hands-on activities to try reusable nappies.

Are you a young parent? Register now for the Young Parents Program with the next group starting in August.

For 2 hours on a Friday morning, new young parents, with a baby under 12 months old, are provided with the opportunity to come together in a safe environment. Here they can learn, grow and build skills in parenting and general life and form social connections.

At the end of the group, the young parents are supported to transition into their own playgroup.

The sessions are supported by a qualified Youth Worker and a Small Talk Program Facilitator.

Are you aged 14-17 and looking to build confidence, strengthen friendships and develop life skills?

Introducing The Forge, a free new program from Knox Youth Services to support young men to explore healthy masculinity, emotional intelligence and positive peer relationships in a safe and supportive group setting.

The sessions will include interactive activities, guest speakers and the opportunity to connect with other young people in a safe and respectful environment.

Sessions will be held fortnightly on Mondays from 4.30-6.30 pm at the Youth Hive in the Knox Library. Sessions will commence in Term 3, 2025.
