Ray takes it easy, relaxing with a copy of Time magazine, while his bus waits patiently behind him. With no grass to mow, there’s little need for the two lawnmowers beside him!

Lucy follows in her late mother’s footsteps, drawn by the beautiful, elusive black opal and the unique spirit of Lightning Ridge.
She discovers like-minded characters who left behind the comforts of modern life, trading amenities for dust, heat, hardship and freedom.
Was it the opal, the lifestyle — or something deeper?The accompanying 30-minute documentary takes you deeper into the lives of the characters through intimate interviews and their own stories. The documentary has also been shown on SBS.

Today is my heavenly Mum’s birthday. ❤️ Without her, I wouldn’t have had the strength, spirit and courage to create Fragile Black Heart. So much of who I am, and so much of what I have captured through this journey, comes from her.
This work is dedicated to my beautiful Mum, Marisol Di Paolo. I miss you more than words can say, Mum.

Fragile Black Heart is a 35-minute Australian documentary and photobook by photojournalist Lucy Di Paolo exploring the lives of opal miners in Lightning Ridge, NSW. Inspired by her mother, the project explores why people abandon modern life for the harsh, remote outback, with the film often bundled with the book.

What an incredible four days at the Lightning Ridge Opal Festival! It was wonderful catching up with so many familiar faces and meeting new ones. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello and support Fragile Black Heart. To finish off a fantastic event, congratulations to Dorothy “Dossa” on being crowned the 2026 Lightning Ridge Opal Queen! A well-deserved honour. 👑💎
