* Creator: Lucy Di Paolo, a Melbourne-based photographer who began the project in 2007, exploring the lives of opal miners in Lightning Ridge, NSW. Inspired by her mother, the project explores why people abandon modern life for the harsh, remote outback, with the film often bundled with the book. The title Fragile Black Heart, “Fragile” refers to the opal, “Black” to the quality of the stone, and “Heart” for the community and her mother. Tea & Sympathy — 20 Years On

Bernard Fanning’s Tea & Sympathy became the soundtrack to a turning point in my life.
A 14.5 hour solo drive from Melbourne to Lightning Ridge, with my two dogs beside me, heading into the unknown — no real plan, just instinct and a camera.

Some albums stay with you. This one carried me.

Track after track, it softened the distance, held the silence, and made the road feel less solitary. It wasn’t just the music — it was the memories it stirred, the sense of courage it gave, the quiet reassurance that I was exactly where I needed to be.

That journey marked the beginning of Fragile Black Heart — the people, the landscape, the raw beauty of Lightning Ridge.

And somehow, this album was part of it all. Thankyou

“Hi Lucy, what a blast from the past. That was so long ago. So my family walked from Broken Hill to Cobar, then Dubbo, woodcutting for the mines, before walking to Walgett where they got a shed shearing at Uarie, then walked out to the Ridge. 1906… Hope that’s a bit more of an insight.”
Stories like this are part of what makes Lightning Ridge such a unique and historic part of Australia—built on resilience, risk, and generations chasing something beneath the surface.

Today I heard the sad news of the passing of the founder of Magnet Gallery, Mr Michael Silver.

Michael was not only a respected press photographer, but someone who greatly influenced my own journey into photography. He was always kind, generous, and welcoming, greeting everyone with a warm smile.

Thank you for supporting Fragile Black Heart throughout its time at Magnet Gallery. Your encouragement meant a great deal to me.
