FRIENDS of ANGLESEA RIVER say the river system is now “dead” after years of coal mining impact. 🌊💔

Dick O’Hanlon, co-founder of Friends of Anglesea River, has helped monitor the river’s health for a decade. Once a haven for anglers, he says the river’s health has dramatically declined.

“It might look good, but it’s dead.”

Freja Leonard, Climate and Methane Campaigner from the Australian Conservation Foundation, says it is not uncommon for fossil fuel companies to fight to do the bare minimum in rehabilitating their sites.

“This is a problem across the oil, gas and coal sectors and is very much a product of economic rationalism trumping environmental concerns,” she says.

Events and projects have driven the community to sign petitions and submit to Southern Rural Water, opposing Alcoa’s pumping plan, even bringing the local council and water catchment authority onside: https://www.friendsofangleseariver.org/petition
