An honour and a thrill to be invited to contribute to the latest issue of to share Chasing a Plate’s favourite Malaysian and Singaporean eats around Aotearoa New Zealand. We’ve spent over 13 months eating and filming around both countries which we reckon works out to be about 3,950 meals, snacks and morsels consumed in an effort to immerse ourselves in two of the world’s greatest food cultures. It was so exciting to be able to highlight some of the incredible restaurants, food trucks and small businesses in Aotearoa where you can get a true taste of Malaysian and Singaporean classics. Grab a copy and makan, makan! 🤤

Thank you 💜

In no particular order, our Top 10 Eats in Tāmaki Makaurau for 2025. We would eat at all these spots (in fact everywhere we’ve filmed this year) again in a heartbeat.

Massive thanks and kudos to the owner operators, chefs, back of house and front of house teams who welcomed us into their space and allowed us to share their story.

And thank YOU for watching and sharing our content, heading out and trying the spots we showcase, helping us keep the wheels turning on CAP (here’s looking at you rockstar patrons and channel members) and for coming up and saying hi when you see us out and about. We 💜 you!

One of our favourite new openings this year- has morphed from food truck to bricks & mortar on Dominion Rd. The food combinations here are unique, unusual and very delicious. Think fried chicken and creamy garlic pasta, smoked teriyaki pork belly and tomato cream pasta, steak and creamy mushroom pasta, fried chicken and croffles (waffles made from croissants)- it all makes sense after you take your first bite. Owner operators Eddy & Jenny are super enthusiastic and joyful about what they’re creating at Famous Eddy and it comes across in the food. We love it!

Mexico is one of our favourite places in the world. We’ve spent over 6 months there travelling across 12 of its 31 states eating, eating, eating. We favour the markets, the street carts, the cantinas and neighbourhood restaurants.

When we first ate at in it felt like we were back there. There’s an earthiness not just in the flavours but in the patina of Mexican food which we’ve not discovered anywhere else in the city. The food at Sagrado Cantina is traditional, honest, homestyle cooking. Jorge and Andrea have included many of their favourite dishes from around Mexico from Poblano style mole negro to Quiroga’s famous pork belly carnitas (we’ve eaten carnitas in Quiroga and Jorge and Andrea’s taste JUST like them). We could go on and on about how great the food is here but it’s better if you just go and experience if for yourself. Order a Mexican beer, a few tacos, sample the mole enchiladas and I promise the food will make you want to jump on a plane to discover more of Mexico’s incredible cuisine.

📍Sagrado Cantina, St Kevin’s Arcade, 183 Karangahape Road, Auckland Central, Auckland 1010. Open 12pm-9pm. Closed Monday.

🍽️ Tacos $7 (for one), $13 (for two), $19 (for three), $25 (for four)

Sope $10
Ceviche tostada $8
Horchata $8

Cam Blanchard is obsessed with creating the ultimate smash burger and we are here for it. His passion and excitement is infectious- from eating 2-3 burgers a day in the name of research to designing a specially engineered press with which to smash his patties- this is someone who is dedicated to creating a great burger. We know many of you have eaten here but some of you haven’t. If you haven’t- just go. You can’t make a wrong choice when it comes to ordering but we’re partial to the Oklahoma Dreaming which features an onion smashed patty, hot sauce and maple syrup. So. Good.

📍Baby G Burger, 1879 Great North Road, Avondale, Auckland 1026. Open 12:30-3pm and 5pm-9pm Wednesday to Saturday.

🍽️ Cheeseburger (single patty) $13

Fries (large) $8

Tucked in a wee former carpark office is a lilac wonderland of mochi laden cakes, tarts and cookies. Cathy Fan, creator of has turned her love of mochi and baking into a brick and mortar shop after what can only be described as years of hustle. We take our hats off to her- she has created a niche business with legions of fans and her food is delicious. These cakes are special and while many will balk at the price (around $20ish for a slice of crepe cake for example)- they’re worth it. The ingredients are quality- from fresh mango to matcha, not to mention the amount of dairy! Rch, decadent treats that elicit “wows” when you open the box.

📍Fankery, 2B York Street, Newmarket, Auckland 1023. Open 10am-6pm Wednesday to Sunday.

🍽️ Total cost of 3 treats $56.50

We were gutted when Ockhee, one of our favourite spots to grab Korean food announced it was closing its doors. BUT the team have reinvented themselves and are now .nz - think takeaway focused hot dogs and the same flavour packed rice bowls, fried chicken and noodles that chef is known for.

We love the thoughtful touches- the use of purple rice, the small bites of barchan that accompany the rice bowls and being able to add a few chicken wings to your bowl for around $5 🤓

📍Double Dog, Shop D/171 Ponsonby Road, Ponsonby, Auckland 1011. Open 12pm-3pm and 5:00pm-8:30pm Tuesday to Thursday, 12pm-3pm and 5:00pm-9pm Friday and Saturday and 5pm-8pm Sunday.

🍽️ K Spag Bowl $20.90, Bulgogi Beef $26.80 (including 3 wings at $4.90), Smokey Pork Hotdog $14.90
