$5,000 for leaving DV

Anthony Albanese today announced a new $925 million Leaving Violence Program featuring a $5,000 payment for people leaving a domestic violence situation.

The Prime Minister said his government is committed to ending family, domestic and sexual violence in a generation.

"We want women to know if they need to leave they can afford to go.

"Too often, financial insecurity can be a barrier to escaping violence.

"That’s why the Government will invest $925.2 million over five years to permanently establish the Leaving Violence Program."

Those eligible will be able to access up to $5,000 in financial support along with referral services, risk assessments and safety planning.

Did you think the cashless welfare card was gone? WRONG

Indigenous organisations and welfare advocates have blasted a government bill they say cements controversial cashless welfare policies that disproportionately affect First Nations people.

Labor abolished the cashless debit card that operated in several trial sites but has kept income management in the Northern Territory, where about 20,000 mostly Indigenous welfare recipients are forced on to the “basics card”.

The government has said it is consulting on the future of income management policies that date back to the NT intervention with a view to making them voluntary. In the meantime, it has created a new “smartcard” – similar to the cashless debit card – to replace the “outdated” basics card.

Victory for single mums!

Age 14 is the new cut-off for Parenting Payment Single, up from age 8.

At least 57,000 single parents will benefit by up to $176.90 per fortnight by the government changing this age limit.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said lifting the cut-off age for the youngest child from eight to 14 was the right balance.

“Eight was far too low, we think 14 is the right balance,” Albanese said.
