Ever had to cut a hole in your brand-new studio wall?

In this episode, I finally install the baffle boxes I built — sawing, sealing, and learning that good ventilation is equal parts physics and brute determination. It’s one of those steps that looks simple but can make or break your sound isolation.

“Ductwork, when improperly installed, can completely destroy the isolation performance of a studio.”
— Rod Gervais, Home Recording Studio: Build It Like the Pros

Getting air in and out quietly is one of the hardest parts of studio construction, but it’s what separates a room that sounds good from one you can actually breathe in.

Even when songs start with a plan, they are lead by curiosity — and usually a wrong turn or two.

There is a bit of science to songwriting; but it's mostly a playground. A swing here, monkey bars over there, see-saw behind you, and a million ways to get from one to the other.

How do you keep your creative process playful when it starts to feel serious? Let us know below 👇

Anita and I first met when she was a student at a dance school I was working for part of her performance was a beautiful piece where she played cello live alongside a dancer and I helped her out with the audio requirements. The next year we were colleagues in the stage crew.

When I started thinking about doing something different for On the Spot, she immediately came to mind. It was her first time in the studio and she was an absolute champ. Calm, curious, and putting her best bow forward.

We ended up recording two tracks. This was the second and we only had a small window of time up our sleeve and no plan so I did what any desperate producer does…dragged in a few Splice samples. It worked a treat.

And yes we will be selling this beat to the highest bidding rapper.

Sam and I did our first gig together over 15 years ago at the old Lewisham Hotel — right after a pole dancer. True story. The venue decided my band hadn’t brought enough people and charged us $50 after the gig. Sam, being the legend he is, covered it out of his own fee.

He doesn't remember any of this.

Since then, he’s been a mainstay of Sydney’s indie-folk scene, and our paths have kept crossing — from house gigs to festivals, and thankfully, far fewer shows with st*****rs in the lineup or booking agents charging the bands for a gig. This jam felt like the perfect full-circle moment: two old scene friends finally making music together again.

Songwriting doesn’t reward luck — it rewards curiosity.
The accidents happen more often when you’re the kind of person who keeps tripping over guitars.

That’s why practice, prompts, and play are such a big part of the Artist Development program — it’s about building a creative life that invites accidents on purpose.
