COMBAT DOCTRINES ARE BACK!

So instead of the absurdly broken oath of moment that we've seen for a few years now, we have combat doctrines back again!

Honestly this feels a lot better for 40k style space marine strike forces, they can be what they need to be, when they need to be it. But make a bad choice and you'll suffer.

What are your thoughts on it?

Still playing around with the army painter speed paints.

Really enjoying them so far, much more consistent than GW contrast.

Need to go back in on this astromancer and do some more work with washes etc but he's certainly table top.

Please note the red shoes

So still thumbing my copy of the Warhammer fantasy battle book from 1996 and what is really making my brain tick over is the last few pages about campaigns, veteran troops, multiplayer battles, and allies.

I've snipped the veteran units and character section above so you can read along.

My personal view of this hobby, after 34years, is that campaigns and linked battles, narrative evolution of forces, is what I find most enjoyable and what keeps me coming back.

These old rules really give you the ability to increase this narrative enjoyment in your games and campaigns. Could it get broken and weird? Yeah, and?

This book also reminds you through all the additional missions it has, that warfare is almost never symmetrical and most of the missions are lopsided pointwise something we don't do enough of anymore.

But the idea that my hard bitten Jade Warriors actually get better the more they fight, that's cool, that makes me want to name my champion and custom paint a banner.

Over the weekend I think I might distill these veteran rules into The Old World and give them a try.

Sitting here on a Thursday evening waiting for my design team to send me a document package and decided to thumb through the old Warhammer Fantasy BATTLE BOOK from 1996 (5th ed?).

What a great bit of writing, has everything from how to pin metal models and paint Bretonian bowmen, to a suite of campaign rules including veteran upgrades for units, to full lore and painting spreads for every army (yes including chaos dwarfs!!)

I've spent a bit of time recently expanding my old collection of fantasy army books and supplements, and I am enjoying reviewing these as I get more and more into The Old World, might be time to lift some of these missions and campaign systems for it...

I'll certainly share more pics as I go through these books

Grand Cathay test miniature

Didn't have the red I wanted so went for a purple/ burgundy as the off colour instead.

Might try a brighter metallic on the armour moving forward.

Good to have this in the bag though!

Been a little quiet in the hobby space recently with real life commitments taking up most of my time. I have been able to get some more Grand Cathay built, and even got a small battle march game in with David Roth last Friday (total disaster for Cathay)

Might even try to paint up a jade warrior or two today or tomorrow!

PS: how amazing are familiars!!!!?!!?!!

When I was first handed a white dwarf at the ripe age of 5 years old, it was John's artwork that grabbed me and pulled me into this hobby. His incredible characters and worlds that sparked wonder and fascination that has lasted a life time.

I'm gutted, but looking around my office at his works that I have up on the walls, and in the gaming room, I have a feeling your legacy will be eternal.

Rest in peace John Blanche, and condolences to all those who are missing you today.

Had an epic evening of rolling dice at The Combat Company, testing out the Horus Heresy 2.0 port of The Anphelion Project that we are going to play through in a few week's time.

750 pts of Tyranids vs. D99 Elysian Drop Troops in the methane swamps of Anphelion Beta.

The Tyranid swarm came churning out of the trees towards the disciplined ranks of guardmen, bio weapons spraying acids while heavy bolters banged and multilasers cracked.

D99 bought the massive screamer killer down on the left flank using overwhelming fire from Taruros venators. On the right flank the sky was blotted out as shrikes descended from the clouds to tear guardsmen into bloody chunks.

The battle swung backwards and forwards as zoanthropes crackled with warp energy and felled whole squads of D99 troops, cooking the platoon command where they hunkered down directing the battle in the centre of the line.

Incoming air support in the shape of a Valkyrie strafed the Tyranids, unleashing hell strike missiles into the horde, devastating the Tyranids.

As the methane fog settled it was clear that this engagement had cost the Elysians dearly, but they had held the line against the great devourer, the last few remaining Tyranids slunk back into the fog to try the foe another day.

MORDHEIM AUSTRALIS WRAP UP, part 1

So last weekend the Loaded Dice crew loaded up the car and headed south to the nation's capital for the second annual Mordheim Australis event!

Mordheim Australis is the brain child of Andrew and Frankie, people we've known and gamed with for over a decade at this point, Andrew was the guy that got us into EOing all those years ago.

A purely narrative event, centred on an area of the Border Princes called Aldium, this event builds on last year's narrative and our factions from last year, including our own team's: The Cabal, run by my vampire lord Frederick 'Feddie' Von Carstein. This year Freddie was playing a higher narrative function as The Cabal extended it's influences by running the Pit Fighting Guild at the Crimson Circus and providing warbands with a pipeline of veteran henchmen replacements.

This year, our team of: Doug, Ben, Steve, and myself were furthering The Cabal's mission to rid Aldium of Chaos (Freddie only hates two things: Chaos, and hardwork) and in true Freddie style he had delegated this task to his undead underlings, who promptly outsourced it all to a witch hunter they found in the town cryer...

The weekend's games saw my middle management vampire Johannes thrown off a mountain by a rat, where he was promptly robbed by passersby and sent grovelling back to Freddie who threw him into the fighting pits for his stupidity. Johannes wasn't the only failing vamp on the team either, and eventually both him and Steve's vampire Hank were forced to fight the main card round at the Crimson Circus to prove to Freddie they were worthy of their bloodline...

By the end of the weekend, the hire witch hunter, Del A Cruz, hadn't found anyone to tie to a stake as he'd spent all his time harassing halflings from the Moot, in his own words: "Chaos infects the short ones faster as they're closer to the ground", none of the halflings were remotely mutated...
