Three dead after vessels capsize in horror incident off Ballina
Three people have died following a tragic marine incident off Ballina on Monday evening, after two vessels ran into trouble in dangerous sea conditions.
Emergency services were called about 6:15pm after reports a yacht was in distress near the South Ballina break wall.
A vessel from Marine Rescue NSW was deployed to assist; however, while attempting to cross the notoriously hazardous Ballina Bar, the rescue vessel rolled in heavy surf.
Authorities have confirmed three people have died.
There are unconfirmed reports that two of the deceased may be volunteers from Marine Rescue NSW; however, this has not been officially verified.
Four others managed to make it safely to shore and are currently being assessed by NSW Ambulance paramedics. None are believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries.
The number of people originally on board the stricken yacht remains unknown, with early indications the vessel has since sunk.
A major search and rescue operation is ongoing, led by the NSW Police Force, including specialist officers from Marine Area Command.
Additional support is being provided by the AMSAR Challenger jet and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service from Lismore, as crews continue searching the water and surrounding coastline.
The Ballina Bar is well known for its unpredictable and often dangerous conditions, particularly during periods of heavy swell.
