Man Arrested After Woman Found Dead Near Cessnock
A man has been arrested as detectives continue to investigate the suspicious death of a woman in the Hunter Valley overnight.
Emergency services were called to Ellalong Street, Kearsley — near Cessnock — just after 7.30pm yesterday (Friday 31 October 2025) following reports of a domestic violence incident.
Inside the home, police found the body of a woman. She is yet to be formally identified, but is believed to be in her 30s.
Earlier today, police made a public appeal to locate 37-year-old Christopher James McLoughney, who they believed could assist with the investigation.
A short time later, police were alerted that the man had been seen in Bellbird. Officers attended and arrested him without incident.
During a search of the vehicle he was in, police allegedly located a sawn-off shotgun and ammunition. The items have been seized for forensic examination, and a black Hyundai Tucson has also been secured by police.
McLoughney was taken to Cessnock Police Station, where he is currently in custody assisting detectives with inquiries.
Local detectives, supported by the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad, have formed Strike Force Keavall to investigate the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
Investigations are ongoing.
