A hazard reduction burn, known as the Bulkara HR, has been carried out today in the Wallsend area as part of efforts to prepare the community ahead of the upcoming bushfire season.

The operation took place along Bulkara Rd, Wallsend, and was led by Fire and Rescue NSW with the support of the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Residents reported large amounts of smoke across the suburb and surrounding areas, with authorities reminding the community that these burns are carefully planned and managed to reduce the risk of bushfires threatening homes during summer.

Motorists travelling through Wallsend were urged to drive with caution, with smoke likely to linger into the evening.

Authorities are thanking residents for their cooperation and patience during today’s Balkara hazard reduction.
