WHO WILL TAKE THE CROWN AT BERNIES BREAKOUT FINAL?! 👑🎉💃

After some seriously sizzling heats, the stage is set and the crown awaits… who will be Bernies Bar 🦚 Newcastle Australia Breakout drag superstar?

The Good News Hunter is very proud to be the official media sponsor for Bernie’s Drag Breakout and it’s so great to see some of Newcastle’s emerging drag talent take to the stage.

CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF TANTRUM YOUTH ARTS’ ORIGINAL THEATRE 💖

Yesterday I was lucky enough to be invited to Charlestown South Public School, to help celebrate Tantrum Youth Arts 50th birthday!

Originally founded in 1976 as 2 Til 5 Youth Theatre, Tantrum started at the school with weekend drama workshops (held between 2 and 5pm!), encouraging young people to create and perform their own original theatre.

I watched students take part in fun, hands-on drama workshops run by creative director Nel Kentish 👯‍♀️ , before we enjoyed the delicious cake and co-founder Barney Langford reflected on Tantrum’s remarkable journey - including the name of their first show ‘Life through a Lifesaver’!

I loved his story of one of the reasons why they eventually changed the group’s name…He said some members of the audience were confused when they arrived to find older kids in the production and not ages ‘2 to 5’!

Congratulations and happy half a century Tantrum - here’s to the next 50 years! 🎉🎉🎉

ITS BOOK WEEK SEASON: MEET THE DOGS HELPING KIDS LOVE TO READ 📚🐶🐾

After seeing firsthand how difficult reading can be for some children, Tayla McFarlane of McFarlane Real Estate and her family became passionate supporters of Story Dogs.

Story Dogs Literacy Program pairs suitable dogs and volunteer handlers with children who need a little extra support to learn to read at school.

The volunteer duos help over 2,865 children each week across 408 schools around Australia.

The McFarlane family sponsors Willow, a Story Dog and her volunteer handler Mel who visit Speers Point Public School.

They help to cover her training, vet care and weekly school visits.

Tayla’s own Golden Retriever, Sunny, is currently training to become a Story Dog too.

If all goes to plan, Sunny and Tayla will begin visiting children at Valentine Public School later this term.

With Book Week season upon us, Tayla hopes sharing their story will encourage more volunteers and their dogs to get involved, helping even more Hunter children discover the joy of reading.

THE NEWCASTLE OCEAN BATHS ARE GETTING A FRESH LOOK - WITH CONSTRUCTION PROPOSED TO COMMENCE MID 2028 !

City of Newcastle has just released its updated design for the Newcastle Ocean Baths upgrade - following strong feedback from the community.

Key to this new design is the more open layout to the amenities, accessibility and pavilion roof. The roof features an a simplified design and glazed finish that ‘floats’ above the original building to maximise natural light and ventilation.

City of Newcastle CEO Jeremy Bath says he believes the amended design provides a practical way forward.

“Our goal now is to have the DA approved, then move into the detailed design stage before awarding a tender for construction in mid-2028,” Mr Bath said.
