The Wheatland Wanderers Travelling and exploring our beautiful country here in Australia with our Wonderland RV Caravans. Life is to short not to enjoy it !!

Absolutely blows our minds that people can come to a place as wild and untouched as Dirk Hartog Island and still leave their rubbish behind for someone else to deal with.
We pulled into camp only to find rubbish left behind from the previous campers and honestly it disgusts us 😡
What makes it even worse is the fact that it is clearly stated when you book that you must take ALL rubbish off the island with you.
There are NO BINS anywhere out here for campers and it’s not hidden information either.
It’s clearly displayed on the information pamphlet you receive at the ranger station on entry into Steep Point.

“Rubbish disposal on Dirk Hartog Island relies strictly on a ‘pack it in, pack it out’ philosophy.
There are no public waste facilities or dumpsters for campers on the island, meaning you must take all of your generated rubbish back to the mainland.”

So there really is no excuse!!!!!

It’s people like this that slowly ruin these incredible places for everyone else out there, including us.
The sad reality is if this behaviour keeps happening, restrictions get tighter, camps get closed and the people doing the right thing end up paying the price too.
We are so lucky to have access to places this raw, remote and beautiful in Australia.
Respect it.
Leave nothing behind except tyre tracks and memories.

Surely we aren’t the only ones sick of seeing this kind of behaviour out in places like this?

Welcome to “THE BLOCK” on Dirk Hartog Island

Without a doubt one of the most breathtaking camp spots we’ve ever pulled up at………….😱
Perched right on the rugged west coast of the island with nothing but cliffs, crashing waves and endless ocean right in front of us.
This place feels completely untouched.
No crowds, no reception, no noise
Just us, the raw coastline and total isolation in the best possible way 😍
And the whales WOW 💙🐋
All day and even into the night we were constantly spotting them right ou the front of camp.
Watching them cruise past camp honestly felt surreal and is something we’ll never forget.

😳 CRAZY FACT ABOUT “THE BLOCK” 😳
This iconic spot actually got its name from a massive cube shaped rock sitting along the coastline here, believed to have been thrown up onto the cliffs by a tsunami many years ago 🌊
When you see just how high up and heavy this rock is in person, it’s honestly hard to even imagine the force it would’ve taken to get it there.

Safe to say this camp instantly became one we’ll never forget!

What a huge first day this was 😮‍💨
From catching our barge ride over to finally rolling off onto Dirk Hartog Island, it already felt like an adventure before we’d even reached our first camp.
We made so many stops along the way because the views just kept getting better and better the further we travelled.
The rugged tracks, the ocean surrounding you everywhere you look and just how remote this island feels out here honestly totally blew us away 😱
We passed heaps of wildlife too, from massive lizards darting across the tracks to this massive eagle sitting near the old sheep yards 🦅
Seeing the old sheep yards in person was pretty incredible knowing they’re such a huge part of the island’s history, operating from the 1860s right through until 2008.

Safe to say the island already has us completely hooked 🪝😍

Now the big question is where do you reckon we ended up setting up camp for our VERY first night on Dirk Hartog Island❓

Flying past the homestead on Dirk Hartog Island, heading toward our very first camp, we couldn’t help but pull up here to enjoy the views and have a quick bite to eat but it turned into one of those stops where “quick” just doesn’t exist.
Uninterrupted views in every direction, just us and the truck parked right in the middle of it all, surrounded by endless sand dunes.
It honestly felt like we’d been dropped straight into the Arabian desert just without the camels casually strolling past wondering what we’re doing there 🤣🐪🐪🐪🐪🐪🐪

This life we live out here it’s simple, a bit rough around the edges but it’s ours.
We just park up wherever we end up for the day and that’s where we stop.
It’s not perfect, not polished and never really planned, but it’s real and for us that’s all we need 🫶
