Absolutely blows our minds that people can come to a place as wild and untouched as Dirk Hartog Island and still leave their rubbish behind for someone else to deal with.
We pulled into camp only to find rubbish left behind from the previous campers and honestly it disgusts us 😡
What makes it even worse is the fact that it is clearly stated when you book that you must take ALL rubbish off the island with you.
There are NO BINS anywhere out here for campers and it’s not hidden information either.
It’s clearly displayed on the information pamphlet you receive at the ranger station on entry into Steep Point.
“Rubbish disposal on Dirk Hartog Island relies strictly on a ‘pack it in, pack it out’ philosophy.
There are no public waste facilities or dumpsters for campers on the island, meaning you must take all of your generated rubbish back to the mainland.”
So there really is no excuse!!!!!
It’s people like this that slowly ruin these incredible places for everyone else out there, including us.
The sad reality is if this behaviour keeps happening, restrictions get tighter, camps get closed and the people doing the right thing end up paying the price too.
We are so lucky to have access to places this raw, remote and beautiful in Australia.
Respect it.
Leave nothing behind except tyre tracks and memories.
Surely we aren’t the only ones sick of seeing this kind of behaviour out in places like this?
