It is recommended to begin compression therapy as soon as the wound has fully closed for patients who are at high risk of developing keloid or hypertrophic scars, or for those with large scars.
Benefits include

Accelerated healing in the scar area. Prevention of uncontrolled scar growth. Softening of scar tissue and reduction in scar thickness. Protection of sensitive skin or areas with skin grafts and flaps. Relief from itching and pain. Improved mobility of scars over joints, reducing the risk of scar shrinkage and joint stiffness.

Wellness Wednesday 💜

Stress can slow lymphatic flow and weaken immunity because it affects your nervous system, hormones, and circulation, all of which are linked to lymphatic function.

When stressed, your body releases adrenaline and cortisol. This shifts blood flow toward your muscles and away from organs like the lymph nodes, reducing lymph transport. Your lymphatic vessels which rely on gentle muscle movement to pump fluid become less active when your body is tense.

Chronic high cortisol reduces the production of lymphocytes white blood cells that fight infections. It also decreases cytokine signalling, slowing communication between immune cells. This means your immune system responds more slowly to threats.

Stress often causes tight muscles and shallow breathing. Lymphatic flow depends on muscle contractions and diaphragm movement. Shallow breaths mean less pressure change in the chest, so lymph doesn’t drain efficiently.

Long-term stress can trigger low-grade inflammation. This can overwhelm lymph nodes, making them less effective at filtering toxins and pathogens.

Stress doesn’t just affect your mind it literally slows the cleaning and defence system of your body. Relaxation practices like box breathing, gentle stretching, walking, and lymphatic massage can help restore healthy flow and immunity.

I was massaging a new client who hadn’t mentioned she had a C-section. While working on her abdominal area, I noticed some fascial pulling. Her C-section was many years ago, which is probably why she didn’t think to mention it. I asked if she experienced lower back pain, and she said yes. I then explained how C-section scars can contribute to lower back pain due to fascial restrictions and pulling.

Scar tissue and fascia restriction. During a C section, multiple layers are cut skin, fat, fascia, muscle, and the uterus. As the body heals, scar tissue forms. This tissue is less elastic than normal fascia and can “stick” to surrounding tissues. The abdominal fascia is continuous with fascia in the hips, pelvis, and lower back, so tension in one area can be transmitted elsewhere.

Plus a C-section can have a significant impact on the lymphatic system because it disrupts both the skin’s superficial lymph vessels and the deeper lymphatic pathways in the abdomen and pelvis.

The most effective approach is usually a combination of scar therapy and lymphatic drainage, supported by personalised home care education so clients can continue gentle techniques at home between sessions.🌷

Questions oncology massage. What is the most important molecule for maintaining healthy fascia?my answer is water 💧

Here’s why water takes the crown. Fascia is mostly water About 60–70% of fascia’s weight is water, held in the extracellular matrix. Hydration flexibility, Water allows the collagen and elastin fibres to glide, preventing stiffness and adhesions. Nutrient delivery & waste removal Water in the fascial network transports nutrients to cells and carries away metabolic waste. Shock absorption. The water-rich gel in fascia cushions tissues during movement. Lubrication Water keeps the hyaluronic acid in the matrix slippery, reducing friction between layers of fascia and muscle.
Without adequate water, fascia becomes sticky, less elastic, and more prone to injury, no matter how much collagen you have.

When you’re dehydrated
Fascia becomes sticky and restricted. Movement can feel tight or achy. Adhesions are more likely to form, which can contribute to pain.

Foot reflexology can be a gentle and supportive complementary therapy for people with lymphoedema or lipoedema, when applied by a therapist trained in these conditions. While it’s not a cure, it may help in the following ways

Benefits for Lymphoedema. Stimulates lymphatic circulation . Gentle pressure to reflex points can encourage lymphatic flow, helping reduce fluid congestion.
Promotes relaxation Stress can slow lymphatic function; reflexology supports the parasympathetic nervous system, aiding fluid movement. Reduces discomfort May ease heaviness, aching, and mild pain associated with swelling. Supports immune function Improved lymph flow can enhance the body’s natural detox and immune processes.

Benefits for Lipoedema. improves microcirculation Reflexology can gently encourage better blood and lymph flow in affected areas. Eases tenderness. Lipoedema tissue is often painful to touch; reflexology works via the feet, avoiding direct pressure on affected limbs. Reduces muscle tension – Encourages relaxation of surrounding tissues, which can help with mobility and comfort. Promotes overall wellbeing Many clients report feeling lighter, more energised, and less fatigued.

Important
Should be performed by a therapist trained in working with lymphoedema/lipoedema to avoid overstimulation. Best used as part of a broader care plan MLD, compression, movement, skin care. For advanced swelling, severe tenderness, or recent medical changes, clearance from a healthcare provider is recommended.

Wellness mood support 🌿

Aromatherapy isn’t a primary treatment for lipoedema or lymphoedema, but it can be a useful complementary therapy to help manage symptoms and improve wellbeing. ❤️‍🩹

Here’s how it can fit in

For Lipoedema. Pain & tenderness relief. Certain essential oils e.g., lavender, German chamomile, helichrysum have mild analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties that may help reduce discomfort. Mood support. Lipoedema can cause emotional distress uplifting oils such as sweet orange, bergamot, or geranium can help improve mood and reduce stress.
Skin care Oils like rosehip, frankincense, or myrrh can support skin health, which is important if wearing compression garments.

For Lymphoedema. Gentle lymphatic stimulation. Some oils, such as cypress, grapefruit, and juniper berry, are traditionally used to encourage circulation and lymphatic flow used only in diluted form with gentle massage. Skin integrity. Lymphoedema can make the skin more fragile; essential oils with antimicrobial and skin-supportive qualities, like tea tree low dilution lavender, and chamomile, can help maintain skin health. Relaxation & stress reduction Calming oils can help lower stress, which can indirectly support immune and lymphatic function.

Important Safety Points. Always dilute essential oils in a carrier oil before applying to the skin. Avoid deep pressure massage over swollen areas use light, lymphatic-friendly strokes. Some oils like grapefruit or lemon are photosensitive avoid sun exposure after use. Aromatherapy should complement medical and compression treatments, not replace them. People with cancer history, blood clots, or skin conditions should check with a qualified therapist trained in Aromatherapy oncology or lymphoedema care.

Please note For support only not a substitute for medical treatment.

Seek a qualified aromatherapist trained in lymphoedema and oncology care to ensure your blend is tailored to your needs and prepared at the correct dilution. 🌷

Massage & Immunity ❤️

Regular massage, especially techniques like manual lymphatic drainage, can

Support the immune system by improving lymph flow, which carries white blood cells to fight infection. Reduce stress and lower cortisol levels, which helps the immune system work more effectively. Improve circulation so nutrients and immune cells reach tissues faster. However massage doesn’t make you completely immune to illness. You can still catch viruses or infections, but your body may be better equipped to fight them and recover quicker if your immune system is supported.

A surgical scar is more than just a mark on the skin it’s a complex area of healing tissue that can affect deeper layers, including fascia, muscles, nerves, and lymphatic flow. Proper care and treatment can help restore mobility, comfort, and function, not just appearance.
