🚨 AUSTRALIA STUDENT VISA CHANGES — 17 SEPTEMBER 2026 🇦🇺
Planning to study in Australia in 2027? Today’s migration announcement could affect you — but PhD students have an important exception. 👀
Australia has announced a new package of migration and student-visa measures, including tighter rules around family members, course progression, visitor visas and Working Holiday stays.
Here’s the simple breakdown 👇
🎓 1. PARTNER / CHILDREN ON STUDENT VISAS
Most future international students will face tighter restrictions on bringing family members as secondary applicants.
Important: PhD students are among the announced exceptions.
Exceptions have also been announced for some students from Pacific and ASEAN/South-East Asian countries.
⚠️ If you’re doing a Master’s by Research or MPhil, don’t automatically assume the PhD exception applies to you. Check the final Home Affairs rules for your exact course and visa.
📚 2. STUDENT VISA “HOPPING”
After finishing a course, students seeking another Student visa will generally need to demonstrate genuine academic progression — for example:
Bachelor’s ➝ Master’s ✅
Moving repeatedly to the same or a lower qualification level simply to extend your stay will face tighter rules.
✈️ 3. VISITOR VISA → ANOTHER VISA IN AUSTRALIA
The government has announced a No Further Stay condition for visitor visas, aimed at stopping people from entering as visitors and then switching to another visa onshore.
🎒 4. WORKING HOLIDAY CHANGES
Changes are also coming for second- and third-year Working Holiday stays, including ballots and limits on places.
🚨 MOST IMPORTANT PART:
Announced today does NOT mean every rule became active today.
Home Affairs says the changes have begun to be implemented and will be progressively rolled out over the next 12 months.
So please don’t cancel plans or make major decisions based only on social-media headlines.
✅ Check your exact visa subclass
✅ Check the official Home Affairs website
✅ Check commencement dates
✅ PhD applicants: watch the family-member exception carefully
