Imagine buying a new car for your dream trip around Australia, only to find yourself stranded in one place for nearly six months. You may have wondered why we’ve been on the Sunshine Coast so long... today, we’re sharing our experience.
In October 2024, we bought a new VW Amarok V6, making it clear that its purpose was to tow our caravan full-time. Full of excitement, we set off on what we hoped would be the trip of a lifetime.
Within less than a year, that plan began to unravel.
Since July 2025, we have experienced repeated issues with the vehicle while towing, where it goes into “limp mode,” warning lights appear, and there is significant power loss. This has occurred on numerous occasions, unpredictably, often in remote locations or on highways, which has been stressful and, at times, frightening.
Since then, we’ve spent over 200 days trying to resolve the issue with and our selling dealer, including multiple visits to VW dealerships here in Queensland.
Two independent mechanics have assessed the vehicle, and both provided reports stating that, in their opinion, the turbo requires replacement. We have also retained documentation including photos of scanned fault codes, dash warnings, and VW app screenshots.
Despite the information provided, our selling dealer has said: “We do not accept that the vehicle has faulted, nor have we agreed that it has.”
We have been repeatedly asked to present the vehicle with our caravan attached to a nearby VW service centre to attempt to re-create the issue. This request is not feasible given our circumstances—our caravan is our home. Independent mechanics assessed and provided their diagnosis in approximately 1hr, without needing the caravan.
We’ve been on the Sunshine Coast since October 2025, unable to continue our travels while trying to resolve this issue. After 200+ days, it has taken a significant toll. We simply want to travel safely and with confidence in our vehicle.
We’re sharing this not to assign blame, but to document our experience and seek a resolution. If anyone has been through something similar, particularly with VW, we’d love to hear from you.
