Happy Spring Equinox for those of us in the Southern Hemisphere

09/09/2026

Last night, I had a visitor, a beautiful Barn Owl appearing out of the darkness. 🦉

Here in Western Australia, on Noongar Country, the Barn Owl is known as Yoowintj. In some recorded Nyungar traditions, white-faced owls were regarded as powerful signs or warnings, particularly those associated with death. Owls also appear in older Nyungar ancestral traditions, including the story of the Owl Stone near Red Hill, north-east of Perth.

So when this silent hunter appeared before me in the darkness, I couldn't help but wonder. Was it simply passing through, or was it a reminder to stop, watch, and listen?

I've had a few people tell me that runes are nothing more than an alphabet and can't be used for divination. But saying that is like saying tarot cards are nothing more than playing cards from northern Italy. Both began with practical uses, yet both became systems of divination. Around 98 CE, the Roman historian Tacitus described the Germanic peoples casting marked pieces of wood for divination. He doesn't explicitly call the marks runes, but it shows that divination with marked wooden pieces has very ancient roots in Germanic culture. Today, many people use the runes as a legitimate system of divination, just as others use tarot.
