Adnan and Mehdi are now free.
These two cousins were some of the first people to walk out onto those balconies at 721 Main Street, Kangaroo Point, and drop banners over the railing.
Their actions triggered the resistance inside the concentration camp and inspired the fierce resistance on the streets outside.
Adnan and Mehdi came as boys, and grew into adults inside various concentration camps run by Australia.
They were only fifteen. Now they're 24, finally free.
But as Mehdi said, "I cannot be happy yet. How could I be happy when my friends are sleeping with tears and sighs, and wake up with tears and sighs?"
Australia stole nine years of their young lives and is stealing the lives of many others as you read this.
Tonight we honour their grief.
But soon, in the streets, we must honour their rage.
