A photograph taken from the North side of the Fitzroy River, overlooking Quay Street in South Rockhampton, showcases a bygone era when our city thrived.

Were you aware that Rockhampton was once seriously considered as the potential capital? Rockhampton was a strong contender and actively campaigned to become the capital of a separate state, either North Queensland or Central Queensland, during the late 1800s and early 1900s

This ambition was driven by the city's prosperity from gold mining at Mount Morgan and the beef industry, resulting in the construction of grand buildings.

The substantial buildings and impressive streetscapes, such as Quay Street, were built during this period, reflecting the expectation that Rockhampton would become a major capital Despite robust movements and significant local support, including women's leagues petitioning the Queen, the separation efforts ultimately did not succeed, and Brisbane remained the capital of Queensland.

1987 to 1989.

Established in 1877, Allenstown State School proudly showcases Queensland's educational history and architectural heritage, with notable structures like the 1939 Depression-era brick school building (Block A) and 1884 playsheds, set within expansive, beautifully maintained grounds.

Who used to go to the school?

The Pine Beach Hotel, situated in Emu Park Queensland, has a rich history marked by various name changes.

The site was initially occupied by the Brighton Hotel, established in 1871 After undergoing renovations, the hotel was renamed the Blue Bell Hotel in 1879.

Between 1886 and 1888, the hotel was rebuilt and became known as the Grand Hotel However, it was destroyed by fire in 1908.

A palatial house was later built on the site and converted into a hotel and was officially renamed Pine Beach Hotel in 1926, due to the surrounding Norfolk Pine trees.

The hotel's license was suspended during World War II, as the Armed Forces took over the premises The license was renewed in November 1945, and the hotel resumed its operations.

The hotel is located on Granville St, Emu Park Queensland.
