🐾 CONFLICT IN A MULTI-CAT HOUSEHOLD — WOULD YOU HAVE NOTICED THIS?

Conflict between cats doesn’t always look like fighting, hissing or fur flying.

This video is a great example of how subtle intercat tension can be.

👀 Watch the persistent, fixed eye contact from one cat.

Then watch the other cat’s response — rather than challenging him, the more submissive or avoidant cat backs away and creates distance.

To many owners, this interaction may look like absolutely nothing happened.

But this type of staring, monitoring, blocking or causing another cat to retreat can be an important sign of tension within a multi-cat household. Current feline guidelines specifically recognise staring, blocking and stalking as behaviours that can restrict another cat’s comfortable access to resources.

And this is where problems can begin.

If interactions like this happen regularly, one cat may start altering where they walk, sleep, eat or toilet simply to avoid the other cat. Competition or perceived competition around litter trays, food, water, resting areas, hiding places and preferred pathways can contribute to chronic stress and behavioural problems.

You might eventually notice:
• inappropriate toileting or reluctance to use a particular litter box
• one cat waiting for another to leave before accessing resources
• hiding or avoiding certain rooms
• staring, stalking or doorway blocking
• reduced play or social interaction
• one cat consistently retreating when the other approaches

So when assessing a multi-cat household, don’t just ask:

“Do my cats fight?”

Ask:

“Does one of my cats regularly change what they are doing because of the other cat?”

That can tell us much more.

💙 5 WEEKS OF AORELIUS 💙

From a tiny under-100g helpless little blob to a 500g adventurer who thinks he’s ready to take on the world. 😂🌎

But just watch his colour transformation! 😍

One of the fascinating things about watching Sphynx kittens develop is seeing their pigmentation become more apparent as they grow. Aorelius started life looking incredibly pale blue, and over five weeks he has developed into this gorgeous deep blue boy. 💙

Five weeks of growing, wobbling, learning, climbing and discovering his personality — and those ears seem to be growing just as quickly!

✨ Aorelius is the final Litter AO baby still looking for his human.

Public speaking about how cats learn—and explaining the methods we use to train them—was never something I imagined myself doing! 🎤🐈

But standing on stage at the Rockhampton Pet Expo 2026 with Mr Pickle beside me, sharing my knowledge and helping people better understand their cats, was so much fun.

It’s amazing to see the resilience and capabilities of cats when they’re given the chance to learn, build confidence and truly shine. ✨

All three of my expo cats—Sir Dobby, Kreature and Mr Pickle—are individually amazing, yet completely different. They each have their own training personality, attention span and motivation, so what works best for one may not work for another.

What they all share is that they’re trained using positive reinforcement—building skills through trust, choice, rewards and plenty of patience. 🧡

Every expo builds my confidence, expands my experience and teaches us something new.

Onwards and upwards—2027, we’re coming for you! 💪🐾

🏆✨ WE WON!!! FELINE BEHAVIOUR ENTERPRISE OF THE YEAR – AUSTRALIA 2026! 🇦🇺🐾

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Born Bold Cats × The Smart Cat Society has been selected and awarded Feline Behaviour Enterprise of the Year – Australia 2026 in the Australia Prestige Awards!

To be selected, judged and recognised at this level is a significant achievement and something I am incredibly proud of.

And what a year it has been professionally.

Alongside this award, I have continued my Advanced Track studies in Feline Behaviour Science & Technology with CASI, and have been accepted with the Pet Professional Guild Australia (PPGA) — further strengthening our commitment to professional, ethical and force-free feline behaviour and training.

For me, these achievements represent years of learning, practical experience and a determination to help raise the standard of how we breed, raise, train and understand cats.

Born Bold Cats and The Smart Cat Society bring those worlds together — feline behaviour, education, enrichment, positive training and raising confident, well-socialised cats.

And we get to celebrate properly! 🥂🏆

Sir Dobby thinks expo season is nearly over and that summer will be reserved for naps, snacks and lounging in the air-conditioning…

🐾 THE TOP BEHAVIOUR QUESTION I’M ASKED AT EXPOS:

“Why is my cat urinating outside the litter box—and how do I stop it?”

The honest answer? There is rarely a quick fix.

Your cat isn’t being naughty or seeking revenge. From their point of view, they’re responding to pain, stress, fear or a litter-box setup that doesn’t feel safe or suitable.

The first step is always a veterinary assessment to investigate issues such as cystitis, infection, urinary crystals, kidney disease, diabetes or arthritis. If your cat is straining or unable to pass urine—especially a male cat—seek urgent veterinary care.

Once medical causes are addressed, we look at the bigger picture:

🐾 Is it urination or scent marking?
🐾 Is the box clean, large and easy to access?
🐾 Do they dislike the litter, box or location?
🐾 Is another pet blocking access?
🐾 Has something changed or caused stress?

Once established, the behaviour can be harder to change. Your cat may associate the original box with pain or fear, while the new location has become familiar and smells like a recognised toilet area.

The answer may involve veterinary treatment, better litter-box management, environmental changes, careful cleaning and behaviour modification—never punishment.

Instead of asking, “How do we stop the cat?” ask, “Why does this behaviour make sense to the cat?”

That’s where lasting change begins. 🧡
