What is Remembrance Day?

On November 11, 1918, at 11am, the guns of the Western Front fell silent, marking the end of World War I as Germany sought an armistice. This moment became known as Armistice Day, a time to remember those who lost their lives in the Great War. After WWII, the day was renamed Remembrance Day to honour all those who died in both World Wars and other conflicts.

In 1997, Governor-General Sir William Deane declared November 11 as Remembrance Day in Australia, urging a minute of silence at 11am to pay tribute to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation. 🌺
