Train worker hero who saved passengers during mass stabbing attack named
A British rail worker left seriously injured during a mass stabbing on a train has been hailed a hero for saving multiple lives.
Samir Zitouni, 48, stepped in to shield passengers last Saturday when the horrifying knife attack unfolded on the London-bound train.
Zitouni, a customer host, remains "critically unwell" but stable in hospital, British Transport Police said. Three other people remain stable in hospital.
His family said in a statement they were " immensely proud of Sam and his courage".
"We have been deeply touched by the outpouring of love and kindness shown to Sam, and by the many well wishes for his recovery," they said.
"The police called him a hero on Saturday evening, but to us he's always been a hero."
Zitouni has worked for London North Eastern Rail (LNER) for more than 20 years.
It's believed he was one of the first people aboard the train to confront the attacker and shielded a girl, leaving him wounded.
David Horne, LNER managing director, praised his actions.
"In a moment of crisis, Sam did not hesitate as he stepped forward to protect those around him.
"His actions were incredibly brave, and we are so proud of him, and of all our colleagues who acted with such courage that evening."
UK Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander told the BBC the courage shown by Zitouni was "utterly remarkable" after putting himself "in harm's way".
Anthony Williams, 32, was charged with 10 counts of attempted murder over the train stabbing and a count of attempted murder in connection with an attack in London last Saturday.
