What letter writing can do: This message from Mark Zirnsak, Tax Justice Network: "There is good news that the Senate voted against the disallowance motion, so tax advisers will be required to report to the ATO if their clients have provided false and misleading information about their tax affairs and refuse to correct the record (normally a sign of tax evasion or tax avoidance). The disallowance was only just defeated. The Government, Greens, Lidia Thorpe and David Pocock voted against the disallowance, while all the other Senators, including Lambie, Tyrrell and Payman, voted in support of tax advisers ignoring their clients providing false and misleading information about their tax affairs. www.taxjustice.org.au

Thank you to those who wrote to the Senators.

Tax Justice Network Australia is a growing network of individuals and organisations calling for fairer tax systems. We are the Australian arm of the Tax Justice Network.

The Pope calls world leaders to account: "The future of humanity depends on what people choose now, Pope Francis said in his message to global leaders at the World Climate Action Summit of the U.N. Climate Change Conference." www.usccb.org/news/2023/pope-calls-world-leaders-end-divisions-fight-climate-change

Laudato Deum: Chapter 2. A Growing Technocratic Paradigm In this chapter Pope Francis challenges a one dimensional technocratic paradigm, saying "We have made impressive and awesome technological advances, and we have not realized that at the same time we have turned into highly dangerous beings, capable of threatening the lives of many beings and our own survival. We see this playing out in the Middle East right now. Laudato Deum, (Praise God) is about the existential global crisis that climate change presents for all of life on Earth and is written to all people of good will. Each week we will highlight one point.

Laudato Deum: Praise God was released on October 4th, the Feast of St Francis of Assisi. Pope Francis begins: "Eight years have passed since I published the Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’, when I wanted to share with all of you, my brothers and sisters of our suffering planet, my heartfelt concerns about the care of our common home. Yet, with the passage of time, I have realized that our responses have not been adequate, while the world in which we live is collapsing and may be nearing the breaking point. #2. Pax Christi International has prepared this Statement on the Invasion of Ukraine: "One year after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Pax Christi International expresses our deep
concern for countless victims of a war that has led to death, injury, displacement, trauma, and ecological harm. This war has generated almost 6 million internally displaced persons and 8 million refugees; killed more than 7,200 civilians including over 400 children and hundreds of thousands of soldiers; and caused generational trauma." Read the full statement here.

“Let us look at all those civilians whose killing was considered ‘collateral damage.’ Let us ask thevictims themselves. Let us think of the refugees and displaced… the mothers who lost their children, and theboys and girls maimed or deprived of their childhood. Let us hear the true stories.....
