🌺 3rd August – Flower of the Day: Orange Gladioli (Gladiolus spp.)
Ego • Constancy • Quest

Those born under the Orange Gladioli are driven, grounded, and generous. With a deep love of learning and personal growth, they’re the type who rise through determination while uplifting others. Their quiet strength and focus are a powerful combination.

🌱 Australian Gardening Tip:
Plant Gladioli corms in full sun and well-drained soil in late winter or early spring for stunning summer blooms. In most Australian climates, they do well in garden beds or pots. Space them well, about 10–15cm apart, and stake taller varieties. Water regularly but avoid overwatering to prevent rot.

🚨 Harbour Bridge Protest Given Green Light — Despite Safety and Disruption Concerns

Despite serious objections from NSW Police and Premier Chris Minns, the Supreme Court has ruled that the March for Humanity protest will go ahead this Sunday on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Tens of thousands are expected to participate, closing one of the city’s most critical transport routes. Authorities warned of potential crowd crushes, public safety risks, and major disruptions, but their concerns were overruled.

This isn’t about silencing voices, it’s about balance. Protesting is a right, yes, but not at the expense of public safety or the functioning of a whole city. There are many ways to be heard without hijacking vital infrastructure and risking lives.

We should be able to stand for causes we care about without putting the public at risk. This decision sets a worrying precedent.

Canberra veterans are invited to meet up with shelter pups to give them both a new lease on life.

The new mental health program, run by charity group Dogs Canberra is about helping veterans and the dogs to bond and potentially find their ‘pawfect’ foster match.

Open Arms Community Peer Worker Lillie, Dogs Canberra Director Bryce and outreach dog Tofu are pictured at a recent meet and greet session at the Queanbeyan RSL Sub-Branch LifeCare coffee catch up.

Dogs Canberra Managing Director, Michael Matheson-Deng, says the program hopes to reduce trauma and stress for both the veteran and the dog.

‘Many veterans that I’ve known and worked with have experienced isolation, PTSD, traumas and anxiety.

‘We felt that what we did with dogs in structured animal companionship could also be really useful and offer great therapeutic value for veterans as well.

‘Our kennel free model offers a safe and nurturing environment where dogs can recover from the stress and trauma of traditional dog shelters.’

🌸 2nd August – Flower of the Day: Wild Pear Blossom (Pyrus pyraster) 🌸
Passion • Adaptability • Determination

Those born under the Wild Pear Blossom are brave achievers, fearless, focused, and full of drive. They set big goals and chase them with unwavering determination. Quick thinkers with a strong sense of self, they don’t shy away from challenges and adapt quickly when life shifts direction.

🌱 Australian Gardening Tip:
Pyrus pyraster is not widely grown in Australia, but ornamental and edible pear varieties thrive in cool to temperate climates. Choose a sunny spot with well-drained soil. Winter pruning encourages structure, while summer pruning controls growth. For ornamental blossoms, try Pyrus calleryana—a great alternative for Aussie gardens.

My Story

www.cheralyndarcey.com I am a gardener with a passion for ethnobotany, art and sharing my lifetime of plant research, experiences and discoveries through my now almost 20 published botanical books and decks. A spiritual naturalist, a botanical alchemist (I make things with plants!), organic gardener, sustainable florist, environmental artist and I’m the author and illustrator of over twenty botanical titles that share with readers my passion for plants and their relationships with us. Living on the Central Coast of NSW, Australia, I have created and nurture my own extensive flower, vegetable and interesting plant home garden that is my creative and spiritual sanctuary. Currently I am a member of the Toukley Arts Society; an Australian Museum volunteer, (transcribing specimen labels); and a community gardening volunteer. I have a lifelong connection with exploration of the many faceted properties of plants, botanical, mythological, spiritual, medicinal, culinary, in fact our whole connection with the Plant World and I have been sharing my passion for nature and its care for over 30 years. This includes community volunteer work and my exhibitions, workshops, articles and presentations with organisations and institutions such as the Australian Museum, Manly Environment Centre, Ocean Care Week, International Conference for Eco Ideas, Clean Up Australia Day, local schools, youth groups, community events and many other projects. A regular special guest on national morning television, ABC radio and radio stations throughout the world, I am often asked to share the cultural and historical significance of our gardens, plant and floral traditions. My garden and work have been featured in magazines such as Australian Organic Garden, Harpers Bazaar, Country Living and various national and international magazines along with international inflight magazines. The titles I create go a little way to ensuring that wherever you are in this world, the power of the language of plants through their messages and songs and profound healing powers will now be in your hands always. may nature always bless you and may you be the blessing nature needs, Cheralyn 🌻
