At just two years old, Aryatara Shakya has been chosen as Nepal’s new living goddess — the Kumari. She was carried in a ceremonial procession from her home in Kathmandu to Kumari Ghar, where devotees gathered to touch her feet and offer flowers and money.

Now, Aryatara will begin her life inside the palace walls, with only a few chosen playmates and limited contact with the outside world. But in recent years, this centuries-old tradition has slowly shifted, with Kumaris now able to pursue an education alongside their divine role.

A new Kumari is selected when the former goddess reaches puberty, a moment believed to mark the departure of the spirit of Taleju, or Durga, from her body.
