CALLS FOR INVESTIGATION ON STUDENT DATA BREACH BY MICROSOFT TEAMS

SYDNEY 18 MAY,2025

The NSW Opposition is calling on the Minns Labor Government to launch an investigation after student data was collected by Microsoft Teams.

According to reports, the voice and facial biometric data of school students was collected using the Teams video conferencing app in March, and the Department of Education was unaware of what was going on for a month before the feature was switched off in April.

"This is a complete breach of privacy and trust for every student and parent across NSW and the Minns Government needs to step in and get to the bottom of what happened here," Mrs Mitchell said.

"Not only do we not know how long the data was held, but we also have not been told what the data was used for while it existed.

"What's even more concerning is the fact that it appears there are parents out there who are not even aware this occurred - and that is simply not good enough."

There are also reports the Education Department did not answer questions about the number of students and staff affected.

Early Voting -Voting before polling day

Hundreds of early voting centres will be open progressively across the country from Tuesday 22 April 2025 and will run up to and including Friday 2 May.

Check the opening dates as not all early voting centres are open for the entire two-week early voting period.

All early voting centres will be closed on Easter Monday, 21 April, and Anzac Day, Friday 25 April.

Major political parties are stepping up campaigning ahead of pre-polling

Overseas voting centres are available during the early voting period, which is the two weeks leading up to polling day. Not all overseas voting centres will open for the full two-week period and the opening dates and times will vary.

A list of overseas voting centres for the election are available on the AEC site These centres may provide in-person voting or accept your completed postal vote.

If you’re overseas and unable to vote in-person or by postal vote, you should complete and submit an overseas notification form.

It is not compulsory to vote if you are outside Australia.
However, if you do not inform the AEC, we will write to you asking you to explain why you did not vote

Check the opening days and times at the Australian embassy near you. Overseas voting services may be subject to change at short notice and are dependent on the local security environment.

If you are unable to vote in person, you may apply for a postal vote.

Some Australian embassies, consulates and high commissions require you to make an appointment to enter and/or request ID documents like a passport or driver’s licence. You may also be required to pass through security screening to enter the building.

Once in the overseas voting centre, you do not need to provide ID documents to cast your vote.

Many overseas voting centres will accept completed postal votes via local mail or in-person drop-off. The overseas voting centre will forward your postal vote via diplomatic mail to the AEC in Australia. This helps get your vote back to the AEC as soon as possible to meet the 13th day after election day deadline.

Emergency operations underway ahead of Tropical Cyclone Alfred

4 March 2025

Released by: Minister for Emergency Services

Deployments of additional crews from the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) have begun arriving in the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast as the NSW Government ramps up preparations for the potential impact of Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

The NSW SES is leading the response and working with other emergency services and government agencies to get ready for the cyclone which is expected to cross the Queensland coast later this week.

The NSW SES will be able to draw from thousands of volunteers with support from flood rescue trained emergency service personnel across NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW, Surf Life Saving NSW, and Marine Rescue NSW. All are equipped with flood response and wider capabilities.

Residents of the Northern Rivers and Mid North Coast should prepare for damaging winds, large surf, and heavy rainfall, with impacts of the cyclone forecast to be felt from as early as today (Tuesday). Low lying areas may be at risk of coastal erosion.

From tomorrow (Wednesday) onwards predictions are for intense rain, which could lead to moderate and major flooding in many areas, with the potential to close roads, inundate properties and lead to evacuations.

The NSW SES State Command Centre has been stood up in preparation for the severe weather. As well as additional personnel, the NSW SES is prepositioning communication equipment, aviation resources and specialised vehicles ahead of the forecasted impacts of the cyclone. The deployment to date includes two helicopters, two ‘Cells on Wheels’ (emergency service communication hubs), two high clearance vehicles, and a Wi-Fi connectivity trailer, along with back-up generators to support telecommunications towers.

We’re another step closer to delivering a brand new Sydney Fish Market for NSW.

Today we celebrated the installation of the final roof panel on the new market’s unique 200m long floating roof canopy.

The revamped market will be truly spectacular, offering world-class, authentic seafood for an expected 6 million annual local and international visitors - and its new roof is set to change Sydney’s skyline forever.

Construction on the new site has provided a major boost to the our economy with more than $670 million in contracts awarded to Australian suppliers for their services.

And it's supporting more than 700 jobs during construction, with a further 700 jobs once operational.

That means local hands for a soon-to-be international treasure – the biggest fish market in the Southern Hemisphere.

We're on track for a November opening and we can’t wait to show it to you.

Ongoing Rail industrial action in Sydney causing significant disruptions for commuters

Compiled by News Agreggator and Google GEMINI-Fact checking A.Ritenis

According to SBS News reports Sydney commuters should plan ahead and allow extra travel time today as the city's rail network faces disruptions due to ongoing industrial action.

As of 5:00 am Monday, 197 Sydney Trains and NSW TrainLink drivers and guards had not reported for their shifts, resulting in 335 service cancellations, according to Transport for NSW.

Numerous News Reports filed by assorted media emphasize the significant impact of the disruptions on commuters, who have faced repeated delays and cancellations due to the ongoing negotiations.

The rail union and the NSW government are locked in a protracted pay dispute. The union initially sought a 32% increase over four years, while the government offered 15% (including mandated superannuation increases). The union's counter-offer of around 20% over three years was later withdrawn after legal challenges.

Around one million people rely on the rail network daily, and they have experienced repeated disruptions due to the 10-month-long negotiation. The dispute was heard by the Fair Work Commission on sunday with no resolution.
According to the NSW Opposition leader ,...Mark Speakman ,"the Minns Labor Government has lost the plot. The RTBU is running the show, the train network is in freefall,..... and commuters are being treated like collateral damage."

In a media statement released late sunday the NSW Opposition Leader Mark Speakman challenged the Premier with the following taunt:

"Premier - pick up the phone, call your ally Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and admit what everyone in NSW already knows—you haven’t got a clue how to fix the mess you created by your unaffordable promises to union bosses before the election. Ask him to send in Murray Watt, the federal Workplace Relations Minister, and see if he has the spine to pull the handbrake on this rolling disaster."

Paris Hilton among celebrities to lose homes in LA fires

Los Angeles, United Statesusfirecaliforniacelebrity

Film and television stars are among hundreds of people who have lost their homes in the Los Angeles wildfires that have ravaged parts of the world's showbiz capital. These are some of the best-known celebrities who have been impacted by the blazes this week:
- Paris Hilton -

Hotel heiress Paris Hilton, 43, said she watched her seafront Malibu home burn to the ground on live television, writing on Instagram that she was "heartbroken."

"My heart aches for those still in harm's way or mourning greater losses. The devastation is unimaginable," Hilton wrote.

She later shared a video of her five Pomeranians in the back of a car and said she was traveling to a hotel to take shelter.A ferocious wildfire in a Los Angeles suburb devoured buildings and sparked panicked evacuations Tuesday, as hurricane-force winds tore through the region.
Frightened residents abandoned their cars on one of the only roads in and out of the upscale Pacific Palisades area, fleeing on foot from the almost 3,000-acre (1,200-hectare) blaze engulfing an area packed with multimillion-dollar homes in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Firefighters used bulldozers to push dozens of vehicles -- including expensive models such as BMWs, Teslas and Mercedes -- to one side, leaving many crumpled and with their alarms blaring.Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley said despite the chaotic evacuation, there were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.

Hundreds of firefighters swarmed the area, attacking the blaze from the ground and the air, while crews worked through steep terrain to cut back vegetation and create firebreaks.

Around 30,000 people were ordered to evacuate the fast-spreading flames, which leveled multiple homes as powerful winds spread embers far and wide.

One man, who gave his name as Gary, told broadcaster KTLA that hot ashes were raining down on his community of Sea Ridge.

"There was smoke in the distance, and I was assured that it would not come over the hill... Five minutes later, it's coming down the hill," he said.

"Everyone panicked, that's when everybody made a run and went to go and pack their houses up."
