What does it really take to turn creativity into a career?
For Emma Bartik of VOLUPTUARY Ceramics , it isn’t just about talent—it’s about commitment.
In ISSUE NO. 5, we speak with the Sydney-based ceramic artist about what it means to build a life around your practice.
She speaks to the quiet reality of building something meaningful: making time when you don’t have it, trusting the process when results aren’t immediate, and showing up for your practice—especially when no one else will.
Emma Bartik: “Make a commitment to yourself.
If you want to turn your creative practice into a career, you have to be the one who shows up for it. No one else is going to give you permission, carve out the time, or make the decisions for you. That’s all on you.
It’s not just about talent—it’s about consistency and dedication. That means creating time in your day—even when you’re tired, even when you’re unsure—and building towards something bigger, even if you’re not entirely sure what that is yet.
So if you really want it—show up for it. Even before it pays you. Even before anyone else believes it can be a business.
Because the only person standing in your way is probably you.”
