Here's to a Christmas Eve filled with laughter, love, and the warmth of family and friends. As we prepare for the beauty of Christmas Day, may your heart be filled with peace and happiness. This Christmas Eve, I wish for you the gift of love, the joy of family, and peace of mind.

I know I said I wouldn’t post any more walk pics but couldn’t resist these. While the scenery was amazing and the bush was soul restoring there was also some really tough stuff. About 4 km of sucking clay mud that wore us out. I ended up walking the last km barefoot in mud up to my ankles. So much uphill. And flies. Then the fallen tree that blocked out path. I watched Rob scramble over it making it look easy with his long legs. My short legs, however, made it much more challenging and I ended up with splinters in my bum 🤯. And I couldn’t resist the final picture of a kangaroo dropping covered in tiny fallen star shaped flowers. My watch says I climbed the equivalent of 102 flights of stairs yesterday !!!

And today KitKat was not prepared to wait patiently for her bottle. These little animals are so endearing with such individual personalities.

The luscious Carol enjoying every last drop of her bottle and Darryl doing his version of the baby “scrunch”. They are such babies still. If they had their natural mum they’d be snuggled next to her to nurse. We’re always happy to give them the snuggle time they need (not “want”)

I have little Fern and Bambi back for a couple of days of observation after they’ve had some intermittent (but different) tummy issues. Fern has been reluctant to feed and Bambi has had occasional loose p**p (sorry if that’s TMI - it’s always about the p**p💩) But both babies were bright and happy and the p**p is improving. So probably just adapting to changed carer and environment. Sorry about my confusion over who I was feeding. It was 3:00am😂

A new milestone. Darryl and Carol wouldn’t settle in their indoor crate after their 10:00 pm bottles so I put them outside. I brought them back in at 3:00 am when I fed two other little babies just in care but there wouldn’t settle still so I put them outside again. They were content to come back in this morning and are currently asleep in their inside crates. Look at our stunning morning after a night of soaking rain.

This is a longer video than usual but it really shows what it’s like caring for these young wombats. I feed the “big kids” outside in the afternoon as I’m limiting their time in the house now and they are outside from as.soon as the morning warms up until their 10:00 pm bottle and if they are still awake after that I put them back out till midnight (and set an alarm to wake up and bring them back in 😱) this was some of their bottle time.

I gave KitKat her bottle first this morning since TimTam seemed happy to eat his oats in the kitchen. Big mistake!! Even little wombats can bite hard. And the boys just seem to be bitier than the girls. His bites on my legs drew blood. Little s #%t!!

I dropped around to career Cheryle’s the other night to deliver some grasses for her big wombats (one person’s garden weeds are a wombat career’s food source) and blossoms for her possum orphans. Of course we were both in our fluffy dressing gowns. I hope I never get pulled over on these night time trips to Cheryle. Would be a bit embarrassing. 🙄 This is an update on some of her little wombats. Our wildlife careers are worth their weight in gold.

I visited Career Cheryle the other day to drop off extra pouches and soft bedding for her many little orphans in care. These two are her youngest wombats, only about 4 months old and 300-400 gm and in an incubator for a couple more months until their fur grows and they can regulate their body temperature. They have a soft “pouch” in there but they seem happy being out of their pouch. The little girl we were looking at had a possible head injury so Cheryle is monitoring her development carefully.

And then there were four!!! I collected TimTam and KitKat from wombats_and_wildlife_heljan09 yesterday. They’ll stay with me now till release, with Helen providing respite care as needed. She has done a great job getting them established on formula feeding and getting them buddied with each other. We have such a great team. This was last nights 10:00 pm feed before bed.
