Of a world falling apart and the song of human beings: Marco Mengoni's concert
A month ago, I was lucky to experience it with my friend Carol from Sydney, this super show with 78000 locals The seventh date sold out of Marco Mengoni's "Negli Stadi 2025 tour" arrived at Milano San Siro stadium . Mengoni created a concert by borrowing the narrative structure of Greek tragedy. There is pain, fear, rebirth. The setlist and emotions.
At around the 29-minute mark, the performance of his Eurovision entries would begin. His Eurovision songs are:
"Due vite" – Italy’s entry in Eurovision 2023
"L'essenziale" – Italy’s entry in Eurovision 2013
Turning on a spotlight in the darkness and managing to illuminate everything, seemed like a titanic task. Noble, fragile, powerful. Almost utopian. Yet Marco Mengoni, with his tour, is succeeding.
A concert designed in every detail, starting with a spotlight illuminating some ruins placed on stage.
Lately distant from his audience, continuously mourning the loss of his mother, he took that feeling, his, yet collective and transformed it into art for his show, borrowing from Greek tragedy a structure capable of speaking to humanity. And so, carrying a suitcase full of emotions, he arrived yesterday at San Siro for the first Milan date.
A beginning like a true opera. Dancers with covered faces, accompanied by a narrating voice, walk with imposing pride, leaving the audience with a sense of unease, but also fascination and curiosity. Six acts follow: prologue, parodos, episodes, stasima, exodus, catharsis. A narrative structure that begins with post-apocalyptic atmospheres and eventually arrives at crystal cities — fragile, but finally alive.
Prologue – Where it all begins “Since the beginning of time, human beings have tried to understand what they do not know,” says the narrator, who holds the threads of the entire show. It’s the start of everything. The first songs are performed: from "Ti ho voluto bene veramente" to "Guerriero", and "Sai che". Mengoni takes the San Siro audience back to the origins where it all begins.
The stage remains empty, and the dance troupe, choreographed by Daniele Sibilli fills every space with sharp, jarring movements. A crowd of zombies seems to surround Mengoni; behind him, images of a ghost town transport the audience to the epicenter of a catastrophe. The music becomes a political vehicle:
“We think it's never our fault, that the responsibility lies only with others” and again
“We accept a genocide because deep down it doesn’t concern us, but it is through our silence that we are allowing it.”
Meanwhile, the audience sings along to "La valle dei Re", "Non me ne accorgo", "Tutti hanno paura", "No Stress", "Voglio", and "Muhammad Ali".
Episodes – The power of music in pain
There are demons, there is melancholy, there are confessions in his first San Siro show of 2025. On stage, in addition to ten dancers and thirteen musicians, beloved guests appear. The first is Frah Quintale with "Fuoco di Paglia". Mengoni changes outfit, wearing a black suit, and each song he performs writes a different chapter in an emotional journey:
"Cambia un uomo", "Luce", "In due minuti", up to "Hola".
Stasima – Reflection and Healing
At the most chaotic moment, when strong, painful, and disturbing emotions peak, Marco Mengoni stops. Behind him, a new world begins to take shape. Towering glass buildings stretch beyond the clouds. Height symbolizes ascent, struggle. Glass symbolizes fragility. Man stumbles, falls, suffers—but then rises again. The words turn into poetry; his narrative becomes a representation of his lived experience.
And during “Due vite”, something happens. Mengoni stops and crystallizes that moment for himself:
“I would tear off my own skin for the trust you’ve placed in me. I’ve been a bit distant; it’s been a very difficult year,” he says, with clear eyes unafraid to cry.
And so, a new phase begins. In his performance. But also in the human being. With “L’essenziale”, he walks down a runway suspended above the audience.
Exodus – A New Beginning
Yes, it’s possible to begin again by allowing yourself a fresh start. Marco Mengoni does it during his San Siro show, with a friend and admired artist by his side Joan Thiele. He speaks of the strength to endure within one's own fragility.
Catharsis – Purification
Like all great Greek tragedies, even in this live show there comes a moment when everything is ready to be released. There's dancing, there's singing enriched inside after a deep, introspective journey.
From “Pazza Musica” to “Pronto a Correre”, Mengoni takes care of his audience, his people: he walks among them, embracing and being embraced.
He calls the entire stadium to dance even to shout reaching over 107 decibels.
The finale of “Marco negli stadi 2025” at San Siro holds many faces:
The summery, fresh one of “Sto bene al mare” with Sayf and Rkomi
The emotional and liberating one with “Esseri Umani”
A conclusion that encapsulates the courage to be human, the freedom to find yourself and fully live every emotion, surrounded by hundreds of red hearts that remind us: yes, it’s complex but at the same time, it’s incredibly beautiful to exist.
A complex, complete concert. A pop spectacle that looks to the past, but is completely contemporary. Raw and courageous.
