🇮🇳 India’s CO2 emissions from its power sector fell over the past 12 months, only the second drop in almost half a century, according to new analysis for Carbon Brief.

The analysis is the first of a regular new series from Carbon Brief covering India’s CO2 emissions, based on monthly data, compiled from numerous official sources, for
➡️ Fuel use
➡️ Industrial production
➡️ Power output

📈 The analysis also shows that emissions from India’s power sector could peak before 2030, if clean-energy capacity and electricity demand grow as expected.

The fossil funded astroturfing groups are losing.

New research reveals anti-renewables movements are highly organised in the regions and misinformation on the energy transition is “rife”.

The AEMC’s new draft rule will see east coast households be charged up front for new gas connections.

This number will vary depending on where one lives, but Australia has more expensive fuel costs than USA and the costs below are in US$, so almost double it to get them to A$:

‘Many might assume California would be the priciest state for lifetime fuel spend. However, Wyoming is the most expensive state to fill up your car over time. If you live there for life, you can expect gas to tally $201,698.22 between the ages of 16 and 77.

Other states high on the list are California ($167K), Nevada ($158K), and Georgia (also $158K).

The majority of states fall in the $120K-150K arena.

New York and Rhode Island are the cheapest states on the list. Their lifetime fuel spending is in the $90K range.’

🌡️ Global warming linked to the world’s biggest oil and gas companies made all “major” 21st century heatwaves more intense and frequent.

📚 This is according to new research that estimates the emissions stemming from the operations and production of more than 100 “carbon majors”, such as ExxonMobil, BP, Saudi Aramco and Shell.

📈 The fossil fuels produced by these companies account for 60% of all human-caused CO2 emissions over 1850-2023, the study says.

🗣️ According to a scientist not involved in the research, this study “could be used to support future climate lawsuits and aid diplomatic negotiation.”

Yesterday at 12pm (AEST), the National Electricity Market (NEM) set a new record for renewable generation, reaching 77.19%.

Only last Friday, renewables supplied 75.79% of NEM demand, surpassing the previous record of 75.56% set in November 2024. However, yesterday’s new record marks another jump in renewable pe*******on, reflecting the continued growth of renewable energy across the system.

As renewable pe*******on reaches higher levels, each new milestone becomes more challenging to achieve. Further progress will increasingly rely on reducing thermal generation during the middle of the day to unlock more room for renewables.

These records highlight the scale and pace of change underway as Australia moves towards a net zero energy system.
