The Local Project

The Local Project The Local Project seeks to champion the best from industry leaders and emerging designers alike. We span architecture, interiors, product design and much more.

The Local Project was born out of a desire to showcase Australia’s rich design industry. Founded in March 2016 by Aidan Anderson, The Local Project is one of the fastest growing design-based platforms. Driven by curious, innovative artists and designers, we seek to champion the best from industry leaders and emerging artisans alike. At The Local Project our eye is global, yet our focus is distinct

ly local. We explore and showcase how locality shapes design – inception, production, display and reception. Whilst materials, talent and products have a global reach, our view is that they are all entrenched in locality. From material to maker to owner. We place person and space at the fore of all our content. We believe locality is the birthplace of stellar design: connection, knowledge and familiarity to resources, conventions and standard; holding sense of something, belonging and community. Home to a dedicated online marketplace, we connect designers and clients – bridging the gap between artists and design lovers. We bring you a carefully curated selection of Australian (and global) design excellence.

Architects at Home • At its heart, Bondi House by Nick Kent Design is clearly designed for family living. As the owner Nick Kent puts it, “In this age – where we’re at and what we’re dealing with – you do want to come home to a place that’s calm and offers some respite.” And that’s exactly what Bondi House offers: a space that responds and grounds. It’s a dwelling of dualities – industrial and warm, anchored and elevated, disciplined and generous.

Though Kent insists he aimed for neutrality, the result is anything but impersonal. “When you’re involved with your own house, there’s an affection for the people who built it,” he says. “Afterwards, when you’re living there… you’re able to appreciate what went into it.” His home is a faithful reflection of someone who designs not just with clarity but with care.

Issue No. 19 Feature • WOWOWA principal and creative director Monique Woodward describes Claremont as “a gift back to the original” – a phrase that beautifully frames the firm’s ethos.

“We mine the ornament of the era that a home finds itself in,” she says. “In this case, it was Californian Spanish Mission in origin, deliciously Deco yet grounded and earthy.” The home became a love letter to that style, a continuation rather than a contradiction.

Project Feature • From Wharf House’s early 20th-century bones emerges a calm combination of texture and tone, where historic detail and modern application form the foundation for a distinctly contemporary life.

For Arent & Pyke, this project presented an opportunity to breathe new life into a home already rich with character. Anchored on Balmain Peninsula in Sydney, the 1920s Californian bungalow overlooks the harbour towards the bridge and city skyline, its restored interiors shaped with a sensitivity to both memory and renewal. The design traces original proportions and decorative flourishes throughout while introducing a contemporary language through colour, texture and light.

Issue No. 19 Feature • Conceived by architects Kathy Hancox and Michael Kothke of HK Associates, the brief for Real House began with a search for the perfect setting, one that would embody the qualities of openness and privacy.

“Our clients were interested in finding a site in the Catalina Foothills of Tucson that had sweeping views,” explains Hancox. “As these kinds of sites are scarce, we instead transformed a secluded parcel, surrounded by neighbours and downslope from a busy road.”

Video Feature • The Series • In Half Light House, you can clearly read the story of the home, where the original cottage begins and ends, and where the new extension takes over. That shift is marked in colour: the old rooms remain in Dulux Natural White and as you move into the extension the palette deepens to Dulux Black.

It’s a deliberate transition that pulls your gaze through the space, past the new addition and out toward the incredible view beyond.

Issue No. 19 Feature • Though conceived as a cluster of separate buildings, Great Lakes House by And And And Studio and Salmela Architect is anything but disjointed. The sincere response to site and brief, and the rigour with which the project has been executed – both inside and out – culminate in a home that is well loved by its inhabitants.

For Annie Ritz, the project aligns deeply with her philosophy as a designer. “I feel very joyful about this project, and I think it’s because it’s a real expression of my design ethos, which is about finding what’s authentic to my clients and how they want to live and feel in the world, then making that real for them.”

Video Feature • Tasked with creating a dual-purpose residence – both a Byron Bay luxury home for its owners and a luxury holiday home for guests – crafted two interconnected pavilions in . These are arranged to embrace both togetherness and privacy, and to amplify the surrounding elements of rainforest and ocean.

The result is an ocean-view home that unfolds in sequences, shifting from gallery-like arrival to relaxed, open-air living. At its core, the design is underpinned by restraint, material honesty and a layered spatial narrative that balances the cinematic with the serene.

Architects at Home • With construction finishing in 2021, Monique and Scott Woodward of WOWOWA have experienced Magic House through the seasons. “Living with it has reinforced how much textures and colours matter. As the seasons or time of day change, the light dances off surfaces in ways that are constantly surprising and delightful,” says Monique.

And it’s a house that works in both summer and winter. While the living room opens up to the backyard in the warmer months, in winter it stays warm and cosy thanks to good insulation and hydronic heating. “Thermal comfort is everything.”

Out Now • Designers at Home is an exploration into the private homes of leading Australian designers, exploring how material thinking and personal values shape the spaces they live in. The hardcover book offers an intimate perspective on design-led homes, where function and expression are closely intertwined.

Among those featured is industrial designer Henry Wilson of . Tucked into the backstreets of Sydney’s Darlinghurst, his Laneway Glass House is more than a considered response to a tight urban site, it’s a clear expression of Wilson’s design ethos. Both the project and Wilson are featured within the pages of Designers at Home.

Issue No. 19 Feature • With clarity and care, Lande Architects reworked an Edwardian home into a warm, enduring retreat for a family of five. A once-disconnected layout gives way to an intuitive flow, with a lowered dining room blurring boundaries between inside and out.

Custom details – from a dry bar and bookcase to a farmhouse-inspired island – root the interiors in daily life and memory. Terracotta shingles and reclaimed materials lend the house a softness that feels as though it’s always been there.
