Six months in — Show #26 — and we’re heading back to the Motherland: Africa. 🌍

In just 60 minutes, we explore the golden sounds of Somalia’s late-’70s heyday, before flying across the continent to rediscover the long-forgotten gems of Ghanaian Highlife, Nigerian Afrobeat, and Ethiopian Pop/Funk. We’ll also give a nod to the modern pulse of Global Afrobeat and the hypnotic rhythms of Togolese Voodoo Funk.

And to close? A pure obscurity — Niger’s Mamman Sani, serving up a spellbinding slice of Saharan retro-synthesised ambience. ✨

Last night on Strangers in Paradise, we continued the Soundtrack to an Imagined Surf Film series — a sonic voyage from the dreamlike worlds of Susumu Yakota to aquatic sounds from across the globe.

The show drifted through waves of jazz, pop, surf rock, and Brazilian grooves, all shimmering with the spirit of the global underground. 🌊🎶

Last night was the first of two extended Strangers in Paradise journeys — 3.5 hours of deep sonic explorations 🎶

With more time, we stretched out across genres: from Spiritual Jazz to new-wave Turkish, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian rhythms, through to blissed out Balearic gems 🌴

It was a true honour to celebrate the music of Pharoah Sanders, one of spiritual jazz’s most profound and enduring voices. Though we only touched on the breadth of his remarkable catalogue, this is surely the beginning of a continuing journey through his work. For now, the music found its place alongside a cool, luminous Friday evening by the sea.
