Album of the month!!

I Am An Instrument – Receive

If you’ve been listening for a while, you’ll know Strangers in Paradise are HUGE fans of this dynamic, improvisational spiritual jazz outfit. Their recent releases have been consistently impressive, with “Malembe” a standout from a few months back. With Receive, I Am An Instrument continue their journey into the heart of live improvisation—this time captured at Copenhagen’s revered 12-hour “All-Dayer” audiophile event. The result is a record that crackles with the energy of real-time creation, performed for a deeply engaged audience.

Drawing on the melodic foundations of their previous work, Receive pushes further. The tempo is lifted, the grooves are deeper, and the polyrhythmic interplay propels things forward with fluid, danceable momentum.

From the opening title track’s slow-building, 11-minute immersion into groove, to the downtempo beauty of “The Way Ahead” and the more floor-friendly “Communication Through Movement”, the album shifts mood and rhythm with ease. At just four tracks, it leaves you wanting more, but closer “It Forms in Waves” delivers a fitting farewell, meandering gracefully through spacious, meditative territory.

Ultimately, Receive is a celebration of live improvisation, and the rare ability of some musicians to shape beauty from the moment.
