Hello St Arnaud 😄

We’ve rolled into town, the van’s parked up and we’re here for three nights.

For anyone seeing us for the first time, we’re Two 4 The Road, travelling Australia full time with our caravan. We’ve been on the road for nearly 10 months now and we love getting out, having a good look around and finding the things that make a place worth remembering.

Whenever we roll into a new town, we put a shout-out up and ask the people who actually know the place what we should be seeing and doing while we’re here.

And this is where you lot come in. 😄

St Arnaud locals, people who’ve lived here, worked here, travelled through or know the area like the back of their hand…

We don’t want Google’s version of St Arnaud.

We want YOUR version. 😄

The local favourites, the things we might drive straight past and the places you reckon are actually worth having a look at.

What do we absolutely have to see or do while we’re here?

What’s hiding around town that we might drive straight past unless somebody tells us to stop?

Hubby tries a vanilla slice in just about every town we roll into, and we’re still on the hunt for the best one.

We’ve only got two full days to explore, so we’re going to have to make them count.

Well… we FINALLY made it to see the Spanner Man! 😲

Over the last six months, his name has kept popping up in your recommendations.

“You HAVE to see the Spanner Man!”

Well… we finally made it. 😄

And if you’ve never heard of him before, wait until you see what this bloke created.

John Piccoli contracted polio when he was just eight years old and later ran the family farm from his wheelchair.

Then came the spanners.

Over the years, John created more than 100 sculptures using more than 100,000 old spanners, all without plans or drawings.

Sadly, John passed away in 2021, but what he created is still there for people to see today.

So to those of you who have been telling us for months that we HAD to get there…

We finally did. 😄

And now we know why you kept telling us.

Echuca… four nights went WAY too quickly. 😂

We knew before we arrived that four nights wasn’t going to give us a huge amount of time, especially with one of those days disappearing into Bendigo with the Amarok.

So really, Echuca only had three days to impress us.

No pressure. 😂

Turns out, that wasn’t a problem.

There’s something about this place that makes you want to keep wandering.

The old buildings, the Port, the Murray, the history and those quirky little finds that somehow always seem to find us.

And once again, you guys made sure we didn’t miss the good stuff. 😄

The recommendations came thick and fast, and it didn’t take long to realise we had absolutely no hope of getting through them all.

But we gave it a bloody good crack. 😂

We explored, ate, drank, laughed, met some great people and somehow hubby managed to continue his very important vanilla slice research.

It’s a tough job, apparently. 😂

We spent some time over in Moama too, and between the two sides of the Murray, every time we thought we were getting somewhere with your recommendations, another ten seemed to appear. 😂

But one thing really stood out.

The people.

From those who stopped us for a chat to the locals who shared their favourite places with us, we felt very welcome here.

We gave four nights our best crack, but there was simply no way we were going to fit everything in.

Then again, we never do. 😂

And maybe that’s not such a bad thing… it gives us a reason to come back.

Today the Amarok gets hitched back onto the van and we’re moving again.

Thanks Echuca and Moama.

Four nights might have been short, but you certainly gave us plenty to remember.

Echuca… four nights disappeared VERY quickly. 😂

Four nights was a little shorter than we’d normally stay, but we’ve got some family plans coming up so we need to keep moving.

And with one whole day already spoken for with the Amarok needing a trip into Bendigo, we knew we’d have to make the most of the time we had.

But there was no way we wanted to just drive straight through Echuca.

And I’m glad we didn’t. 😄

From the minute we asked for your recommendations, one place absolutely dominated the comments.

The Great Aussie B**r Shed & Heritage Museum. 😂

Seriously, I think half of Echuca was going to hunt us down if we left town without going.

And yep… you lot were right.

What a collection!

And Neil certainly knows how to keep you entertained. What we thought might be a quick look turned into hours. 😂

We spent plenty of time wandering around Echuca too, exploring the Port, walking the streets, poking around the shops and finding a few good spots for a feed and a drink.

And naturally, hubby managed to squeeze in some very important vanilla slice research. 😂

One of our exploring days disappeared with a run to Bendigo for the Amarok.

And even a day that was supposed to be about the car somehow turned into another day of exploring while we waited. 😂

Then today we gave Echuca one last crack.

We found a few murals around town, tracked down that tree we’d been looking for, then Ed and Turbo did the hard work while we sat back and enjoyed a horse and carriage ride. 😂

We sampled some dumplings at Monkee & Co and discovered the scones at My Dad’s Honey are absolutely MASSIVE.

Seriously, we should have ordered one to share. 😂

We called into the Echuca Hotel for a drink and had a good look around. Very old-school from the front, then you walk inside and realise just how huge, modern and gorgeous it is. We really enjoyed it.

We also spent some time over in Moama, caught up with Shaun from UteZ WB, checked out a few cars and had a great chat, before finishing up at Two Lads Brewing.

Not a bad effort for four nights. 😂

But once again, probably the biggest thing was the recommendations.

You sent us to museums, pubs, bakeries, quirky finds and plenty of places we simply couldn’t squeeze in.

And THAT is why we keep asking locals.

They know their town, and they know the good stuff. 😄

We know we haven’t seen everything.

We never do.

But four nights certainly gave us a pretty good crack at Echuca, left us with plenty of reasons to come back.

Tomorrow morning the van gets hitched back onto the Amarok and we’re off again.

Thanks Echuca.

You welcomed us, kept us busy and disappeared WAY too quickly. 😂

Well… we went looking for a fence covered in bras today. 😂

But there’s a lot more behind this one than you might think.

We headed out to Mathoura for a few hours, and the Bra Fence was one place I really wanted to see.

It was started in 2018 by local Sharnie Celli in memory of her close friend Wendy Nikolovski, who had lost her battle with breast cancer the year before. What began with one bra grew into hundreds, then thousands, with donations helping local cancer patients with things like fuel and food vouchers while they travel for treatment.

So while it might look like one of those quirky roadside stops at first, there’s a pretty special reason behind it. ❤️

Of course, while we were in Mathoura we had a look around too.

We found the huge water tower mural, Guardians of the Murray, painted by Spanish artist Dulk and inspired by the native flora and fauna of the region.

Right nearby was The Woodcutters, a sculpture by Geoff Hocking paying tribute to Mathoura’s timber industry and depicting timber cutting across different eras.

Then we headed out towards Picnic Point for a look at where the Edward River meets the Murray.

And because apparently every little road trip needs something slightly random… we found ourselves stopping for a bloody great big cod as well. 😂

A few quirky finds, a bit of local history and one stop with a much bigger meaning behind it than we expected.

Not bad for a few hours in Mathoura. 😄

Well… apparently picking a state and staying in it still isn’t our strong point. 😂

NSW, Victoria, NSW, Victoria… at this point we’re getting pretty good at this border-hopping business. 😂

While we’ve been staying in Echuca, we’ve ducked back across the border a few times to have a look around Moama too.

First up was the Moama Water Tower mural.

Sitting up on the hill, it’s pretty hard to miss, and once you get closer there’s so much detail in the birds and native flora wrapped around it.

Later, hubby and I went for a walk around Horseshoe Lagoon, and on the way back to the car I spotted another mural tucked underneath the railway bridge.

While we’ve been in Echuca, we also received an invite from Shaun from UTEz WB to come and have a look around his shed.

Now anyone who knows me knows an invite involving a few Holdens was never going to be turned down. 😂

And Shaun has a great setup. A few beautiful Holdens surrounded by memorabilia, signs and all sorts of bits and pieces collected over the years. There’s plenty to look at before you even get to the cars.

One of his utes really caught my attention. Across the back is a mural made up of things Shaun loves, and the detail that’s gone into it is beautifully done.

And yes… there’s PLENTY of grunt under that bonnet. 😂

Shaun fired her up and gave it a good rev for us while we were there.

Music to my ears. 😂

After that we drove over to Two Lads Brewery for a b**r, as you do. 🍺

Great little brewery, relaxed atmosphere, good b**r and the sort of place where it’s very easy to sit for longer than you planned. 😂

We know there’s plenty more to see around Moama, but with only a short time here, that was about all we could squeeze in this trip.

I reckon we still did alright. 😄

Well… today wasn’t exactly how we planned to spend a day in Bendigo. 😂

The car needed some attention, so today meant a run into Bendigo.

Good news, the head unit issue is sorted. We’ve still got another problem to deal with further down the road once we can get the parts, but she’s driveable, so that’s a problem for another day. 😄

While we were temporarily car-less, we did what we do best… started walking. 😂

And somehow, for a day that was supposed to be about the car, Bendigo kept distracting us.

BLOOM is on at the moment, and of course the giant flowers caught my attention straight away. Stand underneath them and they open up above you.

Naturally I had to try every single one. 😂

We grabbed the Bendigo sign while we were there too, then there were the tulips. Bright red and yellow, looking absolutely gorgeous in the spring sunshine.

We wandered past the Alexandra Fountain, then on the walk back to pick up the car a mural in the car park caught my eye. Bit awkward to photograph, so I had to grab it in two shots. 😂

Then came the other important job.

Real clothes shopping.

Yep… actual clothes. 😂

We’ve got a wedding in a few weeks and apparently caravan clothes don’t quite cut it.

What followed was dress after dress, shop after shop. I even tried the op shops because realistically, it’s a dress for one occasion. 😂

Eventually Portmans came to the rescue, and somehow I scored 40% off.

No idea what the sale was for, but I wasn’t asking questions. 😂

Sold.

Hubby, of course, had a much easier time and got himself sorted too. 😂

Once we had the car back, we headed towards Echuca with one more stop on the way.

Rochester.

We didn’t get time to hunt down the murals, but I did grab the silos by Jimmy D’Vate. I’ve seen his work in a few places now and I’m a HUGE fan.

So what was supposed to be a car day somehow turned into giant flowers, tulips, murals, real clothes shopping and a silo stop on the way home. 😂

Not bad considering the car was the reason we were there in the first place.

Vanilla slice in hand, hubby fading fast and a long drive back from Bendigo… what could possibly go wrong? 😂

Yesterday’s poor little slice spent the night in the fridge and finally got called up for duty today.

But the big question was…

Did it survive the night, or had hubby finally taken this “research” business one slice too far? 😂

No white coat. No clipboard. Absolutely no qualifications.

Just hubby and another vanilla slice. 😂

We thought we’d have a quick look around the wharf… famous last words. 😂

Before today’s run into Bendigo, this is what else we got up to around Echuca yesterday. 😄

We started at the Port of Echuca Discovery Centre, had a look around the old machinery, then headed towards the wharf.

That’s when I spotted the crane and the life-sized blokes showing how cargo was once lifted between the boats and the wharf.

Turns out this place was BUSY back in the day.

At its peak there were six hydraulic cranes working here, moving goods between the boats, wharf and rail carriages.

Then, while we were wandering along reading a few of the signs, a paddlesteamer came under the old Echuca-Moama bridge, worked its way up the Murray and cruised straight past us.

Well… that was good timing. 😂

The old wharf once stretched 332 metres along the river and was built over three levels so they could keep loading and unloading as the Murray rose and fell.

And somehow Echuca became Australia’s largest inland port.

Not bad for somewhere we’d only planned to “have a quick look.” 😂

We checked out the old railway displays too, which made a lot more sense once you realise river and rail were working together moving goods through Echuca and towards Melbourne.

Then history lesson over… we wandered back through the Port precinct and into the shops. 😂

W**e, honey, ice cream, gifts and plenty of little places tucked into the old buildings.

And just when we thought we were done, a horse-drawn carriage wandered through the carpark.

Because of course it did. 😂

This part of Echuca is just really nice to wander around. A bit of history, a bit of river, a few shops… and apparently no such thing as a quick look.
