This is a Sulfur Crested Cockatoo getting stuck into the fruit of the Macaranga Tree. These trees are found in disturbed areas where they provide shade for younger trees under their fast-growing canopy. They live just long enough to allow the younger trees to mature before they die themselves.
Yes, they're a bit messy in habit and foliage loss.
Yes, they occasionally drop branches (not usually big ones).
Yes, they are an incredibly important habitat tree for Australian rainforests and animals. They must taste pretty good because the birds seem to love the fruit and studies suggest that the native stingless bees love the flowers!
